The NETGEAR WNR854T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Router Gigabit Edition offers:
Wireless-N protocol for up to 300 Mbps throughput.
Four Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports for fast wired connections.
WiFi Multimedia technology for optimized audio, video, and voice applications.
The NETGEAR WNR854T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Router Gigabit Edition lets you easily set up a wireless network in your home so you can share a single internet connection with everyone in your household at speeds up to 300 Mbps. You can stream music and video, make internet phone calls, videoconference, and surf the web, all at the same time.
The WNR854T has a Gigabit Ethernet backbone for maximum speeds. View larger. View back.
Easy Setup The WNR854T makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your LAN into the device and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WNR854T includes a stand for vertical placement.
The WNR854T employs a web-based interface for configuration for compatibility with any computer with a web browser. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your router will always be up-to-date.
New Technology Means Blazing Speeds and Backwards Compatibility The WNR854T complies with the latest 802.11n draft specification which allows for speeds up to 300 Mbps; this maximum speed can be achieved when used with other TopDog devices. By utilizing MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology, the WNR854T has speed and range far surpassing the older 802.11g standard. The preset internal antennas ensure that the device is always tuned for optimal performance, and NETGEAR's Wi-Fi Multimedia technology optimizes audio, video, and voice applications.
If you still have computers that use 802.11g or 802.11b, don't fret as the router is backwards compatible with the older wireless standards and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network. The WNR854T will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.
By using Gigabit Ethernet for the backend, you'll be certain that the router is receiving data at the highest possible speeds. The router also has four Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports in the back for connecting computers to the network via a wired connection that will give the fastest performance.
Security Made Easy The WNR854T offers many security options to ensure your data is private. Double firewall protection keeps your network shielded from outside attacks. It also prevents Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
NETGEAR's Touchless WiFi Security makes it quick and easy to set up network security on a WiFi network by asking for a passphrase from the user. The WNR854T supports WiFi Protected Access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK), and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for 802.11b/g networks. Additionally, you can set security through MAC address authentication, allowing only authorized users onto the network.
The NETGEAR WNR854T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Router Gigabit Edition is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Severe design issueNovember 8, 2008 I have to admit I didn't believe any of the bad reviews and bought the router. It worked fine for 6 month before it went dead and only the green power light works. Search and you will find 100s with the same problem online. The Netgear support does know about the issue but has no solution. You get the offer to purchase premium support for min $65 for the next 6 month but this will not fix the issue. As there is no solution if you pay for a new one you will get the same issue again after some month. Therefore the best solution may be to stick to a company that sells you a working unit and the proper support for it.
Don't waste your money on this product.October 24, 2008 This router is simply too unreliable. I've wasted way too much time troubleshooting various problems over the past 12 months. I've been using routers for over 15 years and this one is infuriating. Do not waste your money on this - look at all the negative reviews! I do hope someone at NetGear reads these reviews.
Broke just like everyone else'sOctober 6, 2008 Well, I took a chance on this product because in the past I have had Netgear products that have performed very well and I bought it refurbished which meant it only cost $48.
It worked very well for the 13 months since I got it leading up till today. Wired was perfect, wireless it would lose it's signal occasionally but not enough to really bother me and the range was very good (I could take my laptop pretty far outside my apartment and still get a signal)
Today I woke up and the router was no longer working, the green power light was the only thing on. I could not connect to the router via my computer and the router was obviously not connecting to my cable modem. I switched out all the cables to make sure the cables were not the problem and connected my modem straight to my computer to make sure it was not a problem with my ISP or my network card (I'm now writing this review on that connection so obviously the ISP and my network card are fine) As a last resort I tried the "Restore Factory Settings" button on the back which did nothing. The modem was kept on my desk in a well ventilated area and was basically not physically touched for the year I had it except the few times I had to restart it (maybe once every 4 months)
If you are looking for a product you can depend on do not buy this router. I have used other company's routers in the past and its sad that you can't depend on any single company since the quality of brands and models seems to vary all over the place.
Netgear RangeMax N - Gigabyte Edition WNR854TSeptember 15, 2008 I read the review by TOL and I needed to jump in. I had EXACTLY the same problem and experience as TOL described. After all the termole TOL described came true, I did get a new router from Netgear in Feb 2008 (I bought my first one in June 2007). Yes, 6 months after I bought it, it fqailed as TOL described.
Well, here I am gain, with another failed router. Yep, the same failure. It failed in early Sept. 2008. Yep, 6 months after the replacement router was replaced. Except this time, I am out of my original warrenty period.
And get this, the idiots at Netgear (India actually) told me that since my router is our of its original warrenty, they will NOT talk to me for free. I had to pay for support. I sent them an email, this service is free, but of course, they never emailed me back, so that was a waste of time.
I really get the impression they do not care nor do they stand behind their products. And for get Customer and Tech Support. If you can spell Router, you more then they do.
So now I have a 2nd WNR854T router that failed the same way with no help or support from Netgear to fix it or make good on the unit.
I have in my home, 4 PC's. All of them have Netgear Wireless Next adapters. I have a wireless Netgear Print Server and a dual drive Netgear Storage device as well as this bad Rangemax Next router.
Today I a tossing all of, yes every last Netgear piece, in the trash. I will never, ever again spend $1.00 of my money on anything Netgear makes. I will even sell my 350 shares of Netgear stock on Monday.
I am absolutely appaled by how Netgear has handeling this situation and I am sadened by these events as I have stood by Netgear products for many years. I have cabinete in my home full of older Netgear HW as I continued to upgrade my systems each year or 2.
Well, the honeymoon is over. I am switching to Linksys now and I hope for better support, great products and endless enjoyment with them.
If you buy any Netgear products, especailly this device, good luck to you, but I bet in 6 mo. your device will die a horrable death.
Best of Luck... Never to use Netgear again Dave.
Believe the bad reviewsAugust 23, 2008 This really is a terrible machine. It constantly drops my connection. Unbelievably bad. Do not buy no matter what price.
