Beautiful Design and Easy Setup The WGR614 is a very attractive unit about the size of a small paperback with a silver exterior and rounded edges. An included plastic stand lets you stand the router on its edge to take up less space.
The WGR614 makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your internet connection into the router and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WGR614 employs a web-based interface for configuration, and the router will automatically do the initial setup by getting your DNS settings and determining your IP address. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your router will always be up-to-date.
Fast and Secure Supporting the 802.11g standard, the NETGEAR WGR614 offers wireless data speeds of up to 54 Mbps, making it possible to share a broadband internet connection, stream music without hiccups, watch videos with less load time, and videoconference without problems. Downloading files is up to five times faster than it was with 802.11b. If you still have computers that use 802.11b, don't fret as the router is backwards compatible with the older wireless standard and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network and the WGR614 will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.
In addition to wireless access, there are four 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet ports in the back for connecting computers to the network via a faster, wired connection.
The WGR614 offers many security options to ensure your data is private. Double firewall protection keeps your network shielded from outside attacks. To ensure the security of your wireless data, both 40/64-bit, 128-bit, and 152-bit (802.11g only) WEP encryption is available, as well as WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). You can also use MAC address authentication to allow only authorized users onto the network.
Keep Tabs on Kids This router is an especially good choice for parents as it allows settings to log all sites that are visited, lets you block specific sites based on whether it contains specific keywords, and lets you set time schedules for certain computers to work.
The NETGEAR WGR614 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Router is backed by a 1-year warranty.
What's in the Box WGR614 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Router, power adapter, Ethernet cable, setup CD, vertical stand, warranty/support information card.

A decent G-router for the moneyAugust 20, 2008 A few weeks ago I purchased this router for a wireless connection with my Nintendo Wii. Needless to say after everything is done, it works great. However setting the router up was another story, and as a forewarning I will say that it does not complete the setup if you have a firewall or parental filter active. I had to have a friend come over and shut off my Safe Eyes filter as well as Zone Alarm so I could finish the setup. It generally takes 15-20 minutes on the average computer to finish everything. It then gives you an option to password protect and WEP your connection.
After the router is active it lets you test your browser (and yes it does work with all browsers). I then could log onto the Wii shop channel from my Wii. Download time is fairly fast, at approximately 1 minute per d/l.
Now, a few weeks into it, I notice that my internet connection frequently and intermittently drops and I must wait 10-15 minutes before it will come back. Sometimes unplugging and plugging in both the router and the modem helps but not always, nor does restarting the computer. A person just has to sit and wait it out (make a sandwich or something).
This can get irritating but in the past I have also had this happen with Linksys G-routers, though not as frequently. And it seemed with the Linksys it was always predictable as it happened late at night, around 1 or 2 AM. The Netgear will drop out whenever it wants to, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day.
So even though the performance is not perfect, it's a nice little unit, doesn't look gaudy or cheap, and the design is simple and sleek. I would rate it a 3.5. The price is decent and if you're like me you can pick it up used for a little cheaper.
I would recommend this over the Belkin routers in an instant. I've heard nothing but problems about those guys.
Supports WDS, Stable and Fast G RouterAugust 13, 2008 As of writing this review, there are nine different versions of the WGR614 router. I have two version 9s, the latest version to date. If you want good value for the money, this router is it.
Setup is very easy, I didn't use the setup wizard. I did the manual setup and was able to setup wireless internet within five minutes. I have ATT DSL and use the router's PPPoE to login to my internet service. With the latest firmware, WDS is now an available option. For those who do not know what WDS is, it is "Wireless Distribution System" which allows you to setup the router as a bridge or a repeater to extend your wifi range. If you have two of these routers, one router would be your base station, your dhcp, nat, or simply put, your internet router. The other router would be the extender to increase the range of your wifi.
I don't understand why so many people report trouble with this router, as its been in the market and well proven along with the Linksys WRT54G. I have had setup these routers for many clients and have not had any problems with them.
The Netgear WGR614 is certainly a very stable, and fast 802.11g router and I highly recommend it.
Avoid this terrible routerAugust 8, 2008 In the 18 or so months I've had this router, it has given me nothing but trouble. Almost every week it will simply freeze and stop working, requiring a reset. However, there is no power switch on the unit, so you have to unplug the AC adapter every time you need to turn it off or reset it. Very inconsiderate and totally lame.
Port forwarding rules often simply disappear from their list, preventing you from ever editing or deleting them, but continue to be in effect, causing port conflict errors later on. Sometimes they disappear as soon as you create them. Worse, Netgear refuses to acknowledge this problem any further than recommending a hard reset to factory defaults, which only delays the problem rather than fixing it. Even if you can get the settings to stick, the forwarded ports often don't work at all. UPnP is the only feature on this thing that actually works. This is the last Netgear product I will ever own.
Don't buy this router because it looks like a bargain. There's a reason it's cheap: it's complete garbage. Save your money and put it toward something better.
Not worth it....July 30, 2008 I ignored the bad reviews and decided to get a cheap router... it worked great for about 30 days, until it couldn't be returned anymore and then it just started crapping out. Every few days, I couldn't connect to the internet... like the other reviews, the router would connect just fine to the modem but the signal would just die for both the wired and wireless connections. Piece of junk, do not buy, really.
Gets the job doneJuly 30, 2008 It was slightly tricky to set up, but a call to the customer service center was all it took to get it working. They were pretty helpful and the wait to talk to someone wasn't that long. We have two Macbook computers and it works fine. I only really use it for email and basic web browsing so I can't attest to how well it works for downloads and stuff. So far, so good.
