Plug and Play NAS storageDecember 3, 2008 I would give it five stars, but having to reformat your storage to get it to work really is a pain. I had to scramble to move the data around a few computers to get it to work, then the time it took to move it all back.
I will say once set up that I am extremely happy with the product, I have a 750GB drive and use multiple USB drives to move things around as well.
I use this with Apple products, Windows XP, as well as linux, so it's definitely something you should consider. The user administration is a little clunky, but you will catch on quickly.
User's can have their private storage areas as well as public storage. The NSLU2 is also extensively customizable from the linux community. I haven't had a lot of time to play with that feature.
Nice home solution but a little bit slow.November 19, 2008 It's a nice little thing for your home network but I feel it's a little bit slow. I guess it's a good back up solution but not a good daily basis kind of drive.
Pure Trash!November 8, 2008 I agree with the other one star reviewer, accept my through put has reached between 2-10Mbits. Don't waist the time on this device.
Great Product to Share Your USB DrivesOctober 31, 2008 This product is great. In just a few minutes I had this connected to my home network and sharing my WD250 hard drive. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to share a hard drive at home. This transfer speed is fast enough for what I am doing. I have 3 computers that share the hard drive I have connected to the device. Two of the computers are running Windows XP and the other one is running Windows Vista. I did install the latest firmware.
It has been running for a couple of weeks and works perfect.
OK Using Default SettingsOctober 19, 2008 My expectations for the NSLU2 were fairly low, be able to access a USB external drive on my internal network. The device works well in this regard as long as you accept that access is somewhat slow when running at b/g wireless network speeds.
The device came up using the supplied software CD. No problem. The problem arose when I changed the default IP address (this feature is supported). After changing the IP address I could not access nor "see" the device, even after disabling my firewall. I called Linksys support and spent over three hours on the phone with them to no avail. They could not discern the problem and we eventually reloaded the firmware.
We were back to square one but the device works at the default settings. Leave the settings alone and you should be fine.
