Fast, Fast, Fast. A Workhorse.November 20, 2008 This MFC-74220 is my first multi-function printer, although over the years I've owned 2 Brother laser printers before this one. Brother products are less pricey and I just haven't been able to discern a difference in quality between Brother and other brands that may be percieved as higher quality. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this multi-function is twice as nice as my last Brother printer, which I loved!
I couldn't be more impressed with this unit. I can't find much, if anything at all to criticize about this multi-function. It's extremely intuitive, user-friendly. I had this machine set up in less than 5 minutes and it's been used continuously ever since. There's no learning curve; it just goes to work. That says alot for a machine that does this much.
My machines receive heavy use. In total, I print, scan, and fax a couple hundred times a day, and often print dozens of pages at one sitting. This machine faxes, scans and prints faster than any machine I've owned before. Print and fax quality are excellent. Buttons, trays and internal access are easy to access and understand. It's not the quietest printer because it prints so vigorously, but I'll trade that slight difference for this sharp increase in performance any day. And other printers that make that idling noise for an excessive time in standby to save energy can be annoying. This one is "just right"!
If it's possible for a multi-function printer to have a personality, this machine would receive an "A" in deportment. This has been a very reliable, effective machine!
happier than with HPOctober 28, 2008 I've had 3 HP all in one's. I've only had this Brother for a month, but I already know I like this much better than any of the HP's. FAST. I love how fast it is. The set up was extremely easy. Thus far, my only complaint is...I print a sheet of labels, maybe once a week. It requires manual feed for this, and if you don't get it 'just right', it may grab the sheet slightly crooked and thus print off a bit.
Seems ok, no OS X 10.5 supportOctober 18, 2008 I haven't had this printer very long but it seems to do a pretty good job over inkjets I've had (ink does not smear). I was disappointed that the bundled MFL-Pro software is not compatible with OS X 10.5 (only 10.4 and earlier).
Oh Bother Why Art ThouOctober 6, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you have an office with more than 10 people and need regular print outs, let's say 200-250 a day, then this is not the printer for you. It has a high initialization time and a slower printing speed. We recently installed a new toner and it still asks us to change something or the other. The printer tends to make a loud sound while printing and sometimes pushing the lower half makes the sound go away. This is definitely not for rugged use. None of us have the time to really keep taking the toner out and putting it back out as is often required.
We haven't tried printing in colour cause we don't need it. All printouts have a nascent smell which although is good for a successful print, the smell really doesn't seem normal. If there are less than 30 sheets in the printer, it will refuse to print and will require repeated assistance. Although it has never printed jumbled characters, the printer takes just TOO MUCH TIME to print and often performs below par.
Maybe we just need a new printer but we have two of the brothers in our office and in order to save face we might be getting a different printer soon.
Please overlook unless you're one of the maybe two people in your office. We have always been patient. Infact, I myself have tried to see if there's something wrong with it, it works ok for a day and the next day it gives you the same trouble.
So, by unmistakable first hand experience, I reckon this printer needs no words for appreciation.
Great all -in-one machineSeptember 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Brother MFC 7420 was well worth the money. Although I don't really use a printer regularly, I use it as a fax and copier. The only feature I wish it had in the fax mode, is that it would show the number dialed which I'm faxing to after it starts sending. At that point, the number disappears from the window, and just shows Page 01, Page 02, etc. If you are sending the same fax to diff numbers, it is nice to know where the machine is at the point you may look at it, but there would be no way to tell. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this machine, and the flatbed copier is well worth it in itself.
