5 out of 5 stars Absolutely LOVE my kindle!!   August 29, 2008
I received a kindle as a birthday gift after numerous, not-so-subtle hints. As I opened the box, and was holding it in my hands, my eyes focussed on the book shelves against the far wall. A momentary ache in my chest. For thousands of years people have defined their identities through the books on their bookshelves, the book in their hands. The personal library of identity is the tradition by which all all mp3 and dvd collections mimic. I was suddenly less sure of how fulfilling my kindle would be. After all, I can't see the book covers, it doesn't sit in my library for family and guests to be impressed by, upon completion, I couldn't just pass it along as a good read.
One day later, i was so over those ruminations.
Frankly, if I feel a book is core to my being; reflecting who I am, what I believe, my ideals, my passions, I will buy the hardback. It will become part of my physical library.
But I'm going to get the kindle version too.
I'm going to get the kindle version of all the books I love.
And I'm going to get kindle versions of all the books I will read.
I'm going to carry the dern thing around with me everywhere! It's so awesomely portable.
Sitting in the cafe, scrolling through my library, I realize that the greatest joy I experience with my Kindle is that I can bring ALL the books I love with me everywhere. I can't even begin to describe the feeling of joy, humility, pride, and excitement of having an entire library with me at all times. A library that is, searchable, sortable, expandable is both a comfort and thrill that I've rarely felt. I'm a little girl riding an airballoon, cradled in her fathers arms.
Is this overdramatic? Maybe. But I really love it that much.
If you think getting used to holding it 'just so' is an annoyance, you'll get over it, and find a comfortable pose soon enough. Imagine carrying 20, 50, 500 physical books with you at all times; the one "where do I put my thumb" complaint seems a little petty.
One of my biggest fears is the unguaranteed permanence of it. Will amazon be around forever? Will they always support the kindle? Will they always support this version of the kindle? My heart is already desperately tied to the fate of the kindle. Please read this and buy a kindle.
It has changed my life. I'm reading more, learning more, and loving life more.

5 out of 5 stars Technical issues   August 29, 2008
A book which I was reading mysteriously disappeared from my Kindle. A call to customer service did not resolve the situation The follow up response which was promised more than 24 hours ago has not arrived. All the other books are there and readable.

The Kindle is a wonderful device!! I love it! I have a medical condition that makes it hard for me to hold hard copy books, and the Kindle is the perfect solution for this. I take it everywhere I go because it is portable enough to go in my purse. Now, if I have to wait somewhere, I do not mind as much as it gives me a chance to bring out the Kindle and read. And the fact that you can buy another book immediately is wonderful as well. You never have to worry about bringing along an extra book in case you finish the one you are reading - just buy another one then and there! It fits perfectly in your hand or lap, or rests against any object. It works just as it is described and it is very easy to use. If you have enough knowledge to buy the Kindle online, you have more than enough knowledge to use the Kindle right out of the box. Simple, direct instructions - not complicated at all. Everything is already downloaded - all you have to do it turn it on! I have yet to run across a book I couldn't purchase through the Kindle, and in the end, I probably spend less on books via the Kindle than I did on hard copy books - and I read a book a day! I was hesitant about purchasing the Kindle just because the technology is new and I wasn't sure what it was going to be like, but I have not regretted it at all! It has surpassed all my expectations and I could not live without it. I also like the fact that I feel I am contributing to a more eco-friendly world. Note: the customer service has been outstanding as well.

5 out of 5 stars Love my Kindle   August 29, 2008
I recently received a Kindle as a gift. I had been considering buying one, but was hesitating. As I was opening the package, my friend told me it works on the Sprint network. I was immedialy concerned, as I have Sprint cell service, and the cell reception at home is terrible. But, I started up the Kindle and within moments accessed the Kindle store, bought a book, and it was downloaded within moments. I have now read with ease several books on my new Kindle. This device is great, I love it and the abilty to quickly download a book anytime, anywhere.

3 out of 5 stars Kindle shortcomings   August 29, 2008

I read the many comments regarding the awkward 'next page' bar design, but ordered a Kindle anyway. At this point, however, I find it virtually impossible to hold the Kindle in a comfortable reading position without touching the 'previous' or 'next page' bars, as they encompass the entire left and right sides of the device - and wish I had waited for a fix to this serious design flaw. It is incomprehensible how the Kindle made it into full production without someone realizing the problem - and I look forward to the availability of some sort of retrofit case that protects the sides from inadvertent contact. Such a retrofit should be made available at no cost to all who purchased the Kindle.
