4 out of 5 stars Very nice but not perfect   August 7, 2008
I purchased the Black Zune 80 v2 several weeks ago and use it daily. It was easy to set up and sync my media. I did have an initial problem connecting wirelessly to my home network but found the correction to my home wireless router (access point). I needed to disable the Quality of Service feature.

The connection to the pc was easy but a standard USB cable would be nice instead of a Zune specific cable.

Video screen is very nice I downloaded a couple of movie trailers to the zune and watched them and they looked great.

Initially I was skepticle of the software mainly because I don't like having my hands tied to one specific method to add to my device. I have grown used to it now and it is easy to use. I would still have liked to be able to use the default windows media player or just explorer as an option of managing my media. I have just started setting up a few of the free podcasts and find that I enjoy that more than I thought I would. Very cool feature to have some new content every day.

The Zune navigation was fairly intuitive and I can move around easily.

The sound is very nice with the premium ear buds but when I swapped them for other pairs I own I noticed a big difference in the sound. I think it would be nice to have a built in equalizer to tweak the sound with.

I did have one bad experiance when riding my harley I had it connected to the auxillary input and within a few miles it became useless, to much vibration I guess. When I eventually stopped it was locked up tight. Luckily a search found the reset sequence (Hold the back button while pressing the "up" possition on the D-pad).

Overall I like it very much it is easy to use and has more than enough storage for me. I think if you looking for nice device to store large amounts of media this is a very fine player, but don't buy it if you need to use it when it is being bounced around alot.

3 out of 5 stars A few problems   August 5, 2008
I just bought the Zune 80 and now I'm kind of frustrated and shooting in the dark. There's absolutely no instruction book that I can find of any kind. It would be nice to know how to turn it on, create playlists, and do other functions. Also, what do you do when you're through playing it through your stereo? Do you take it out of the charging dock and turn it off? I'm not sure, because there's no guidance. But, after a couple of days of trial and error, I'm starting to figure it out. After finally creating playlists and listening to the music outside, I realized that different audio tracks play at different volume levels. This is totally unacceptable. Who wants to go inside and be continually adjust the volume? Microsoft wouldn't forget a volumne normalization feature, would they? That's my biggest complaint. Also, another reviewer didn't like the fact that you could not drop and drag from windows to the zune software. I agree. I think I'm going to take it back and get an IPOD Classic. It's my understand that the IPOD has volume normalization through a feature called Sound Check. I don't think the Zune is the right way to go for people who want it specifically for music.

3 out of 5 stars fantastic hardware, horrid software   August 5, 2008
Over 400 reviews already written here so I will try to keep my brief. I am a web developer so I am fairly good with computers, software and gadgets... just keep that in mind. Here is my take on the Zune:

PROS:
1. beautiful - very slim and sexy piece of equipment and the red is a nice touch.
2. good headphones - these are ear in semi noise-cancelling headphones. They do their job quite well. The sound is clear, deep base and they look very nice and modern.
3. georgous screen - the huge screen definitely sets this apart from the ipod. When you fly a lot then having this monitor is a huge benefit. Solid display at a good size
4. quality sound - the sound is very good in all accoustic ranges.
5. FM Radio - I still listen to it. Hello NPR!

CONS:
SOFTWARE - This is the puzzling point. Here we have a company that rewrote the book on usability with windows software, office software, internet software and so forth. Yet they give you an application that, although its intuitive in many ways, it acts at times like it has a mind of its own. Drag and drop is not a simple feature. At times you need second party software to prepare the mp3s to be recognized as belonging to the same album/folder/artist.

Let me reiterate, software is Very frustrating and it is the biggest stepping stone to getting this piece of equipment. I personally would recommend purchasing your Zune from a place that you can return it within a couple of weeks and giving the software a serious test drive. Try its audio syncing, podcast feature, video transfer and so forth. Even for someone like me who is comfortable with applications, I am stunned at how severly limited the application is.

Zune also isn't recognized as an external drive. Forget about using it to carry data from place to place. Hello, its 2008! Worst of all, you can't use windows explorer to drag and drop and manage stuff on your zune hd. This is perhaps my BIGGEST complain. You have to go through their semi-archaic software to manage your music and at times when it syncs, it will screw things up on your zunes HD; files will not belong to the correct artist, some will get deleted cause they no longer are on your PCs HD.

No Equalizer - To this day I havent found anything on how to adjust the sound...

BOTTOM LINE:
Purchase this if you wanna give it a try. Its good but only buy it from a place that you can test drive it and return it. Spend LOTS of time initially learning the software. This is going to be the big challenge. Try every aspect of the application and see if you can live with it... C+ product. God I could have sworn that Microsoft had something to do with making good software?.. If Apple had FM and a big screen on their IPOD, they would have easily won my dollar.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.   August 5, 2008
So, my dell Jukebox finally gave up after almost five years of excellent service.
This time I have decided to go with Microsoft's Zune 80GB.
I have read some pretty good things about this player.

First, what I don't like:
To be honest, I'm disappointed with sound quality.
I knew they gave up equalizer, but even my old dell with equalizer Off sounded much better. The sound is so flat, no depth at all. High tones don't exist, bass sucks. I can't believe there is no way to fix this. Even with expensive earphones you can't compare Zune's sound quality to five year old Dell. (?!)
Shame on you Microsoft. Why don't you update firmware and give us a nice four band equalizer.

There is not much in the box.
Everything must be purchased extra, including protecting or caring case and travel charger.

Battery Indicator is very inaccurate-after calibration seems to work fine though-but why do I have to recalibrate a brand new unit?

Now, what I like about Zune 80GB.
Nice crisp screen, good quality video (if you need it), easy to operate pad and FM radio option (how about AM Radio in next Zune?), 80GB storage for nice price.

Would I recommend this player?
For $250-Yes, but if you expect high quality sound-you'll be disappointed like me!

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, but a few drawbacks   August 5, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Great sound. HUGE capacity. Easy to use. Only con I have found so far is...I have my pictures files on my Zune. I have selected (under settings) to choose which pictures to add/delete. I have deleted the ones I don't want to take up space. EVERY TIME I recharge the battery or put on new music, it also downloads all the pictures I have laboriously deleted off my Zune. 100's of them. VERY FRUSTRATING! Does any one have any suggestions? Thank you!
