Customer Reviews:
You Get What You Pay ForNovember 25, 2008 Well, I ordered this product 5 days ago from Amazon and today have just received it. When I opened the package and read the box, my expectations really turned into disappointment, which I'll talk about first.
Basically, Belkin reveals all over the package that this is their low-end product and router. Right on the front box, it states this router's speed and performance highlighted as "good", with better and best to the right of it. Not something that would really appeal to the customer's eye in my opinion because I look for the best I can get for the price, and I'm not sure if this product is it yet. All over the box this router is stated to be designed for basic home connectivity, with simplicity in mind, not speed or performance.
Alright now let me get down to me setting it up and using it. The unit contains instructions that are very easy to understand, read, and execute. I have a cable modem, in which I plugged an ethernet cable from the cable modem to this router, and an ethernet plugged into the router to my computer. The instructions portray a different way of connecting the router to the modem in which my modem didn't feature, but it worked the way I did it so I'm happy it even works.
I inserted the set-up CD into my Windows Vista computer and started setting up and configuring the router. The disc's application is very easy and simple to go through. You set up the name of the connection, and then if you want you can set up its security.
From what I have found, there is no need to necessarily set up the router, as when I tried configuring it a handful or two times, it made no effect to the router. I tried setting up a connection name for my network, but my laptop's wireless network card detects it as its factory name, and I tried setting up both WAP2 and WEP security for this router, but it had no effect, and my laptop is able to connect to it without a password or network ID, and actually fails to connect to the router using the password for WEP or WAP2 that I configure..
I'm not too happy about its security and will be on the phone with Belkin in a few hours to hopefully resolve it. I don't like the fact people can tap into my Internet connection. It gives me an uncomfortable and angry feeling, simply because I'm paying for the service which is designed for me specifically to use, not only the other fact that it can be abused under my service.
Writing this review I was disconnected for the second time for an unknown reason. I couldn't connect for about 15 mins either...I'm not sure if it changes its IP periodically or what, but it's rather frustrating.
For the price, it may be worth it, but I have nothing to compare it to.
On [........] the speed is "okay" but I have had faster speeds with a Westell router. Download speed @ 5838kb/s upload @ 2556kb/s...on a cable internet connection.
Great for Less Than A MonthNovember 21, 2008 The setup process is very simple. Just follow the easy instructions and pop in the cd. It took less than 5 minutes. It worked great with the xbox 360. However it died in less than a month. Unfortunately, I had to call customer service. Their advice was to return the item for a new one. He said " return to store maam and have a great day." I will not be purchasing another belkin router after this experience.
