Product Description Netgear delivers Gigabit performance and a full set of Layer 2 management features with the GSM7248 ProSafe 48-Ports Gigabit L2 Managed Switch. This next-generation, high-speed switch delivers maximum throughput to high-performance workgroups at the edge of the network or as a backbone for Fast Ethernet switches and high-speed servers in demanding small networks. The non-blocking design offers full Gigabit throughput simultaneously to all 48 10/100/1000 ports to ensure reliable performance. Flexible fiber connectivity is enabled through eight combination Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) gigabit interfaces. Layer 2 management functionality delivers reliability, control and availability. Network administrators can use any combination of these features to ensure uptime, availability, bandwidth and throughput. With increasing bandwidth requirements from applications such as voice, video, database management, and other services that slow throughput and response time, you can unleash your network and enable maximum productivity with Gigabit Ethernet. Customer Reviews:
Excellent ValueOctober 7, 2008 I have been a fan of NetGear's blue-metal-box line (now called ProSafe) for some years, so I dove into this box (and its 24-port brother) for a project I was working on.
Out of the box, they were plug-and-play. They automatically detected 4 parallel spans to another vendor's switch and started using them before I had a chance to formally configure a LAG (link aggregation group).
The auto configuring ports perform flawlessly in our mixed network of 10/100/1000Base-T based Macs, printers, routers, servers, and various toasters. In fact, they perform so well, they, um, "pointed out" some driver issues we had on a few systems that had trouble coping with the added speed.
The web UI is spartan for sure, but quite functional. Configuration settings are pretty obvious without reading the manual. Their SNMP MIBs are complete.
There is one gotcha... You must remember to *save* your settings. It does not do this automatically.
Support seems excellent, and they openly describe fixed bugs and any outstanding issues contained in each firmware update available from their website. (I didn't need to upgrade, I did it to test the upgrade process.)
Adding icing to the cake is a lifetime warranty and a high MTBF.
If I were to pick a word describing this box, it would be "lean".
