new owner of KindleAugust 7, 2008 I just got mine today and downloaded a book. (Anatomy of Deception).
My initial negative: It is way too easy to accidentally hit the page change buttons. Very annoying. I am new to it, so perhaps I'll learn to hold it in such a way that unwanted page changes don't occur. However, that will likely mean I won't be holding it the way I normally hold a book! I almost sent the thing back because of this one negative. But I will give myself more time.
The Kindle books one can download at this time is still relatively small and filled with items of no interest to me or which I have already read. No doubt this problem will resolve itself over time.
Electronic Lust that delivers!August 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just wanted to say I love this little white device. I love having my entire digital bookshelf in the palm of my hands. I have used other e-book readers in the past, had a subscription to the Filament book club which came with a "free" book reader. It wasn't free...you have to be a member of the book club for at least 1 year to offset the cost of the reader. I was fine with that at first, however the book club didn't offer a lot of books, just a lot of books I had no interest in reading (sea-faring adventures, historical dramas, old old stuff....a few paranormal titles I was interested in as a fan of Coast to Coast AM, but there wasn't much and it was all over-priced IMHO,and no popular authors to be found) Once I stopped paying the subscription, the device was pretty much useless since you had to have an open account with them in order to place anything onto the device. ( I could be wrong on that account, but they didn't make it easy to place your own material onto the device) Very closed system. I then purchased a Palm Tungsten E2 and used that specifically as an ebook reader. Well, the battery on those things run out faster than my drive to continue reading, the screen was small and I was always turning pages every 20 seconds, etc etc, and again there was in my mind a very limited amount of books I could download and purchase for the device.
Fast forward a couple of years later and I discover the amazing Amazon Kindle on their site...wasn't even looking for another ebook reader...but then I went to the Kindle site, watched all the videos, and fell into electronic lust once again. I love my electronic gadgets, yes I do, and the Kindle is one of my favorites.
The Kindle is very easy to read, in just about every text size they allow you to change for the books you are reading. I've used it outdoors in bright sunlight without problem reading it, and I use it indoors in low light...that's when I bump up the text to its largest size (lol). I will be getting one of those clip-on lights for reading at night in my bed soon.
I am a big fan of science fiction and horror novels, some of my favorite authors are Steven King, Dean Koontz, Frank Herbert (Dune novels), Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clark, Anne Rice and many others, and I am very happy with the selection of books I can find on Amazon.com's Kindle store for these authors....sure, I want every book they have ever written, like yesterday! I have previously purchased books on my Palm device, and to my delight these books can be carried over to the Kindle with a free conversion tool, and they are all entirely readable.
Reading the internet sites on a Kindle is an exercise in patience, however I am hoping they can improve on this area with an update in the future. I work out in the oil fields of West Texas, and in many places I cannot get internet access on my laptop. In those times, if I want to check up on the latest CNN story or the weather, most of the time I can connect with wispernet and be online within a minute or two.
Overall I am very happy with my Kindle and I use it every day....I am reading so much more than before and I feel my life is more enriched by it. I would recommend a Kindle to anyone who loves to read, period. Is it a perfect device? No. My iphone isn't either, but Im not reviewing that little device, am I? Nope! I know once you buy your Kindle it will bring you many hours of fun and entertainment. Isn't that what leisure reading is all about? :)
I love it!!August 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have never reviewed anything in my life, but I finally ordered a Kindle (after debating it for months) and it is awesome!! I do agree that the page turn is a little slow and the buttons are not that well placed, but I am going to Mexico and this little thing is 100 times easier to carry than a suitcase full of books! Thanks Amazon.com!
I had to return my KindleAugust 7, 2008 2 out of 16 found this review helpful
I loved the kindle and what it is capable of doing except that the "next page" button kept being hit accidentally by either my fingers or something else. It was very frustrating to keep losing my page and having to look for it. I think the next page button on the right side of the machine covers too large of an area and it is in the way. It also goes all the way to the edge, thus increasing the chance of being hit my mistake. I will buy a Kindle once they have redesigned it so one can hold the machine comfortably without worry of hitting the wrong button my mistake.
3 words: color, touch, solarAugust 7, 2008 1 out of 30 found this review helpful
Another Newton? Or RocketBook? No thanks!
When it has color, touch screen and a recharging solar panel on the back - then I'll buy it. And gladly.
