Extraordinarily Poor Cover DesignOctober 11, 2008 I just got my Kindle and, like most folks, love it! But the cover is poorly designed... remarkably so, as it is intended to hold and protect such a sophisticated, expensive device. There is a flat, 1.25" plastic tab inside the right-hand side of the cover that is designed to fit into a niche on the battery cover (located on the back of the Kindle). However, the niche is only a shallow indentation and there is no "catch" or "locking" mechanism that fastens the Kindle to the plastic tab. The niche itself could have easily been designed with a v-shaped indention that would grab the edge of the plastic tab, but that is not the case. The Kindle easily falls out of the cover.
Inside the spine of the book cover are two corners that fit over the left-hand corners (upper and lower) of the Kindle. They fit around the Kindle nicely, but do nothing to hold the device in place.
My solution was to use a small piece of adhesive Velcro on the back of the Kindle. I placed the Velcro on the white plastic upper back portion of the Kindle - not on the battery cover as the stress of holding the device in place will pull the battery cover off. I wait to see if I will regret putting an adhesive material on my Kindle or on the suede interior of the book cover. I find it extraordinary that this cover was so poorly designed that a user is forced to "rig" it or risk having the Kindle fall out and possibly break.
On the positive side, there is a nicely padded portion in the inner left-hand side of the cover that cushions the screen well. When the left-hand side of the book cover is folded back and secured with the elastic strap, a small ledge forms on the left-hand side that makes a decent hand-hold when reading the Kindle.
All in all, just a small adjustment in design would have made for a much more effective book cover, even using the exact same materials. If I had purchased this cover separately, I would return it immediately. I agree with the reviewer who said that Amazon should feel obligated to redesign the book cover and replace the defective design at no charge to all purchasers.
Moi's KindleOctober 6, 2008 I like having a cover but the Kindle slides alot, isn't really locked in place.
Poor System for holding the KindleSeptember 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the second one of these I have received. The little plastic piece that is to hold the back of the Kindle is glued to leather which becomes too loose to do its job and eventually breaks off.
Book Cover perfect complement to KindleSeptember 24, 2008 I have had my Kindle for approximately 2 months. I was initially concerned when I read the many negative reviews about the book cover. My own experience has been very positive. The Kindle book is securely latched in the cover as long as you understand that you should pick it up with the front up as you would any book. If you are really concerned about the Kindle falling out of the Book Cover, an elastic band is provided for additional security. But having said that, I seldom if ever use it and I am a very frequent traveler and have exposed the Kindle to all of the unexpected issues of travel without any serious incident. The design of the cover is such that it permits the folding of it to the back of the book which permits very easy holding of the Kindle with your left hand and easy access to all of the keys. The book cover has the appearance of soft leather and looks very professional. The Kindle Book Cover is in my opinion very well designed and integrates very well with the Kindle book.
Kindle CoverSeptember 20, 2008 The cover that comes with the Kindle is dreadful. I had problems with the Kindle falling out of the cover. Sometimes it was so difficult to hold that it would cause distractions while reading. I replaced the cover with a much better one and I no longer have a problem.
