Good value mini-laptopOctober 15, 2008 I bought and delivered the ASUS 1000H to my son who is a student in Germany. For such a small and relatively inexpensive machine, it is fast and has a lot of good features. It really suits my son's need as a student particularly well. I did not detect any of the keyboard deflection problems reported in earlier posted ratings. It's quite sturdy overall.
Better than expectedOctober 15, 2008 I've enjoyed this machine for 3 weeks now and have been very impressed. My son bought one as soon as they came out and was keen on it. I needed a basic Windows PC with long battery life and this fit the bill. I just returned from a trip to Europe and used it over five hours during the flight with plenty of battery left over. (To get the full 7 hours, just turn off WiFi, bluetooth, and any background programs not needed, and dim the screen a bit.) This is a great product for me.
The best netbook everOctober 15, 2008 I've been using 1000H for some time now and I can say only one thing - I love it. Keyboard is much bigger and much more comfortable than in 900/901. It has 80 GB drive so I have plenty of space, built-in bluetooth and it runs for 4.5 hours straight!
It is also important that it has some room for improvement - you can upgrade RAM to 2 gigs and change hard drive. Current hard drive is very old model so you can swap it for 250 gigs and it will still run long on batteries (new drives have lower power consumption).
You can also put SSD drive whenver you want to. Funny thing is that when buying 1000 (without H) with SSD, you can't swap it for HDD, because that model doesn't have enough space for full size 2.5" HDD.
So it was good choice, especially when you consider its price.
Best sub500 10" netbook currently availableOctober 14, 2008 I've always wanted a small, light but still usable sub $500 laptop that I could easily carry around everywhere and after years of waiting this is finally it (Of course, within months you'll be able to get more for the same money as that's just how it goes in retail electronics).
If you have small hands or the unit is intended for a child, you're actually better off with something like the Asus 900HA or Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 - both of which are smaller, lighter and cheaper.
If your intent is very processor intensive tasks like gaming or extensive photo/video editing - you should be paying more money for something with a more powerful processor.
But if, like me, you have average or larger sized hands, and need access to email, internet, multimedia, reading documents/spreadsheets, etc. - this thing is as good as you can currently get. Here is more detail:
Likes:
1) Keyboard is acceptable - about as good as I could reasonably expect on a 10" notebook and my big hands. Nice feel. I am lucky because my quirky touch typing habits already in place were to use the right shift key for only 3 letters: a,z,q. I don't use this for typing up long documents but it's fine for light use like replying to emails, typing into search boxes, etc. Interestingly, I can type almost as fast with this laptop as I can with a regular keyboard, so long as I don't accidentally brush the touchpad or need to type a capital "A," both of which happen on occasion.
2) Keyboard provides quick access to well thought out group of features with hot keys and function key - and the pictures on the keys are great for someone like myself who has trouble memorizing keys.
3) Terrific screen, usable even when on second lowest brightness setting.
4) Great battery life and terrific power management schemes. I usually use second dimmest setting and wifi (no Blue Tooth or WebCam), and extensive use of hybernation (including auto hybernate after 10 minutes of no activity) - and I basically never run out the battery. Probably getting 5 hours or so.
5) Surprisingly fast. Though not getting .n speeds with the Apple Airport extreme, it seems pretty close to as fast as both my home and work desktops (2 and 4 years old, respectively) for use with everyday tasks like email and internet.
6) XP is the right choice. I agonized for months over whether to make the switch to Linux but glad I didn't as this has been so stable that I've stopped rebooting - just goes in and out of hibernate, which means it starts up a little faster than a Linux version would. I didn't have to give up Roboform, Bridge Baron, and tethering with my Blackberry (haven't tried it yet, but will if I travel).
7) External monitor management is very slick with the FN-F8 key.
8) Sound through headphones is really terrific. Using speaker it's okay - acceptable for notebook.
9) Once I got it working well, the touchpad is so nice to use that I actually prefer it to a regular mouse while browsing the internet. On the other hand, a regular mouse is easier to use for editing a document or spreadsheet.
Dislikes:
1) As usual with any XP machine, have to uninstall a bunch of junk, though it wasn't too bad with 1000h (primarily Windows Live)
2) Touchpad way too sensitive out of the box. By installing elantech driver, tweaking these settings, and lowering the sample rate - it's now pretty good - but this should have worked better out of the box. Wasted something like 2-3 hours figuring all this out.
3) The array of drivers and where/how to update them is needlessly complex, confusing, and time consuming. Requires use of a forum like eeeuser to have a chance of getting it right.
4) A bit too heavy to be used for reading eBooks. But when carrying in my Swissgear/Wegner Synergy backpack, I hardly notice the extra weight.
5) Fan usually quiet but sometimes gets inexplicably loud after running just a few minutes under a light load. Usually when I'm holding it up in the air to read like a book.
Overall - for the money, it's a great value - a better value than any computer I've ever purchased. Not a very good eBook reader but a terrific general purpose notebook with a small, but still usable form factor. I am not envious of any competing models currently available.
AS US Eee PC 1000HOctober 13, 2008 So far a great little machine. I use mine around the house and at meetings, etc. Everybody that sees it falls in love with it. So far three of my fellow workers took the plunge. Loaded XP-PRO and all is fine. Don't expect to use this as your main word machine. It fills the void when you don't need or want to lug a monster around.
