1 out of 5 stars Drops connections. Need to return.   October 13, 2008
I have had this for a couple of days and within hours noticed a severe problem with the router. It constantly (dozens of times daily) drops connections. This is happening over the wired network and was not an issue with the previous D-Link router. After researching online, I learned that the router is overheating. I use gigabit for most of my network and fear that it just can't cope with the speed. Under even moderate loads, it will disconnect ever few minutes. This is wholly unacceptable and raising the box to allow more airflow didn't help. Copy any large file over the internet or across the network and the connection will drop - guaranteed. This is especially annoying when using remote desktop since it reconnects every 5-10 minutes when the connection drops.

I haven't tried wireless yet, but other comments online point to the problem existing there as well.

The long and short of it is that I will be returning this shortly and am thoroughly disapointed with it.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Range, Unable to maintain reliable connection   October 13, 2008
Purchased this to work with a Linksys DMA2100 Media Extender (N-dual band) along with my existing Media Center PC which has a USB linksys Dual band adapter. Range was no more then 50% of my existing wireless-G Linksys WRT54G. The N-Wireless connection very unstable espically to the USB Link sys Dual band adapter. One would think Link Sys's N-Products would work well together.

Returned. Ran hard wire from my wireless G to the Media Extender. Left the Media Center PC on wireless-G. Now the connection is quite stable.

This Wireless-N just doesn't seem up to par. 4 times the range I think not. Don't think the 5GHZ is going to help either, the range on the 5GHZ freqency, as to be expected was half again that of the 2.4GHZ Wireless N.

4 out of 5 stars Top of class router -- just not perfect.   October 13, 2008
From everything I read and from the other networking devices I've used (of inferior specifications), this appears to be among the best high-bandwidth wireless N routers. In my home it's simultaneously networking 2 laptops on the 5 GHz band and another 3 on the 2.4 GHz band while also serving media to those 5 machines from an NAS device as well as a 6th connection, a wired HTPC.

The range and performance are great, and I've always liked Linsys' administration interface. My only qualms are with the occasional dropped connection on the wireless side (rare) and the trouble with simultaneous up and down stream connections. From what I can tell by reading professional reviews for the 610N though, there isn't a better solution. So it's not perfect, and the specs are a little misleading as to what it "should" be capable of in terms of throughput, but that's more the fault of the defined standards than of the device itself.

Overall highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars WRT610N wireless N dual band router   October 11, 2008
I've been using this product for about 3 weeks now. I had no problem with setup, as I never use the setup wizard or the instant setup button on the front of the unit. Logged in, changed password, setup the two bands with WPA 2 and started connecting, no problems. Compared to the WRT54G I was using before, this is absolutely stable, I haven't had to reboot it yet. The 54G was rebooted upwards of 4 times a week. I did change the placement of the router in the house to better cover more area. The speed when connected in N at 15' away is always 270 Mbps, reliably streams full DVD from an NAS, need I say more.

4 out of 5 stars great compatibility and stability, reach could be better   October 10, 2008
wow, the reviews on this wireless router are all over the place. so i thought i'd share my experiences.

i owned a wrt54gx4 and noticed that it had compatibility issues in a varied environment - the wireless clients include he usual assortment of PCs (which worked fine), an iPhne (which always had to try to connect a few times), a linksys skype phone, a Roku netflix player (worked fine), and a number of Logitech squeeze* music streamers. and the Logitech Duet was having massive issues.

i just unplugged my own router and set up the WRT610N *manually*, the is, using none of the easy setup tools provided with it. i assigned the 2.4ghz band to G and B devices, and the 5ghz band to N. both bands share the same security and passphrase.

the upshot: all previous compatibility issues are gone - the WRT610N is far more compatible with a wide range of devices than the WRT54GX4 was, that is certain. the devices have connected nice and smoothly.

the only reason i am not giving it 5 starts is because, compared to the WRT54GX4, the reach of the WRT610N could be a bit better. i guess there is a price to pay for the slick internal antennas, but i wish wireless router vendors would always give us a choice to attach our own external antennas to improve reach. signal levels have dropped 5-10% throughout the house. i shall play a bit with the placement of the router, but doubt huge dividends will result.

i just bought this router, so it came with the .18 firmware, which was allegedly made available in august, and i hope overcomes the issues some of the reviewers in here encountered. it works very well for me, even though for the price i would have expected similar coverage compared to the older GX4...
