Great ProductAugust 30, 2008 This product is what I was looking for( a small easy to operate emergency radio in case the power goes out. It has great reception and doesn't use the batterys up fast. I recommend this product.
little big radioMay 9, 2008 A great little radio. I listen to FM most of the time and this radio has very good sound.
Perfect!April 11, 2008 This radio is great. Its small and portable and it plays the radio wonderfully. I was looking for a small AM/FM radio for my kitchen and this is exactly what I needed.
Excellent Basic RadioApril 11, 2008 Sometimes you just don't need, or want, all the bells and whistles that can come on audio equipment. Sometimes all you want is the basics, and that's what you get with this radio.
There are two controls on the right side - one for tuning and one for volume/on-off - as well as an AM/FM switch on the front. You can extend the antenna on top for FM reception, but you'll have to turn the radio itself to get the best AM reception, as that antenna is built into the radio.
There is a fold-down handle on top. I guess if you want to carry it around it would be handy, but since I just leave it sitting on the shelf it's not a biggie for me. There is also a headphone jack on the right side which could be handy for those not wanting to disturb other people with their listening, but I have no need for that either.
On the back, there is a battery cover panel that also covers the space where you store the AC power cord. As in most portable electronics that I've owned use both batteries and AC power, they don't allow a lot of room for the cord and it takes a bit of effort to get it stowed correctly for portable use, but it's not impossible. I always run the radio on batteries (4AA - I use NiMh rechargeables) so it's not a problem for me.
I find that the reception is good on both AM and FM and the sound quality is definitely better than my old radio, which tended to be on the high treble side. This radio has a nice lower-mid-range sound. Tone is not adjustable.
I have only one complaint. The volume control is also the on/off control. Located on the right side of the radio, it's difficult to use just one hand to turn it on and off. There is little weight to this radio so there is nothing to "push" against to get the traction you need on the volume wheel to turn it on. I either have to try to grab the radio with my right hand as I'm turning it on, or use the other hand to hold it down while turning it on with my right. I am also always concerned about the quality of volume/on-off control wheels. This is what gave out on my old radio. In my opinion, I think it would be better to place an on/off switch on top of the radio which is separate from the volume control, both for ease of turning on and off and for preventing wear on the volume control. This is a very minor quibble and certainly nothing that would keep me from buying it again.
For those reading the reviews raving about the excellent price, we all bought this radio at a time when it was less than a THIRD the current price. Amazon appears to have changed vendors for this radio, and I would not have purchased it at the current price. At the old price, it was an excellent value, and perhaps at even double the old price I would buy it again, but at the time of this review it is overpriced.
