5 out of 5 stars Great price for great graphics tool   July 30, 2008
Just after beginning to use a new art program, I purchased the Bamboo Fun Small graphics tablet. While I would have liked to have gotten the larger one, I didn't want to spend double the price for an extra 2". It takes a little bit of time to get used to, but enables a much greater control over your drawings than you can get using the mouse alone. I sometimes find myself going outside of its boundaries and wondering why it isn't working. In any event, it's a great tool and I would recommend it for anyone.

I have PhotoShop on my iMac and really like modifying pictures with it. I have trouble with fine details using the mouse and keyboard. I Googled around a bit and found that Wacom is pretty much the industry standard for pen tablets but were priced more for the professional than the enthusiast. Wacom was astute enough to realize the unmet need at the entry level and introduced a hobbyist version and named it Bamboo Fun. I'm not certain about the Bamboo since it is all plastic but it is Fun. I went ahead and purchased the unit and installed the software. Fired it up and it worked right out of the box. It makes tracing cutouts or blending areas with brushstrokes much more precise than using the mouse/keyboard and produces better results in less time. Even though I did load the bundled software I do not use it since I have Photoshop CS3 installed which is more powerful than the bundled Photoshop Elements. The only knock I would have on the Bamboo is the line width does not track the pen pressure as precisely as I would like. I was so impressed with the Bamboo that I stepped up to the Wacom Intuos PTZ-630 which does have better control and a larger tablet area but at 3X the price. In reality, I tend to use the Bamboo more because it is lighter, smaller and easier to use but if line width becomes more critical I switch out to the Intuos. In summary, I am really impressed by the build quality, ease of use and overall performance of the Bamboo Fun and would buy another if I needed it.

4 out of 5 stars "fun"   July 12, 2008
nice and slim and fits on you desk good - and the extra mouse (also controlls your cursor) - all it took was a phone call to the support team to figure how to make it draw - through photoshop - but I am still playing with it to see what it can really do. A neat toy !!!

Bamboo Fun (Small) Black Tablet with Pen, Mouse & Graphics Software

This is my first tablet. I've wanted one for years and finally I have one. I have no regrets. Using pen is very intuitive in Vista and Office 2007. Also I'll be using it extensively with Adobe's CS3.3 Suite.

All of the reviews already explain how well designed and easy to use this product is. The truth is, it really does work as advertised.

One of the reccurring criticisms has been that the pen stand is not weighted. I feel the same way. The stand does hold better if it is weighted. What delight to discover that this is very easy to do.

You can open the stand by twisting off the top from the bottom. (No screws or glue)
Once open, I took some plastic wrap and some sand and created a little sandbag tube that would fit the base. I sealed the plastic with packing tape so the sand would not escape.
Make sure that the center is unobstructed so you can twist on the cap.
Close up the base and, "Presto!", you have a weighted base!
Now I can pull my pen out of the base without giving it a second thought. The base is sure to stay in it's place. All it took was one or two tablespoonfulls of sand some plastic wrap, tape, and 5 min. of my time.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   June 20, 2008
A friend of mines lend me a Bamboo Fun tablet for about 1 and a half months and Bamboo Fun delivers the ease and control I want with my artwork. Installing it was a breeze - and using it was easy, partly due to the reason I had previous experience with tablets in my computer class. I've gotten used to it in a few hours I used it, but it may take time for others - don't worry about that. Once you're used to it, you'll experience the fun with this tablet.

The time I had with the tablet also helped me enjoy drawing art more, and I found myself opening Photoshop to draw practically everyday - it's really addicting, in a good way. :) And now, my interest in art has bloomed more as a hobby.

After I was done drawing, I also found myself using the tablet to browse, as I found it easier and faster to use a pen to navigate and to use the computer. Using the mouse for too long in one sitting can create wrist cramps, and can cause problems to those who do.

Tablets isn't just primarily for artists either; if you enjoy tablets, or maybe you just don't like mouses, I suggest you get this. =) Overall, it's fun, too! Although I didn't install the programs on the CD, I do have the say that the pen stand that comes with the tablet is really useful - if you're a little more on the messy side like me, or you lose things easily, this would deem really helpful.

I did not use the wireless mouse, but you're going to be so addicted to the tablet, you might not even use it at all. I think Wacom should really just sell the tablet and mouse separately, that would save money for those who need to.

Yesterday was my birthday, and apparently, I'm getting a tablet. Although it's not Bamboo Fun (Graphire 4 instead), this tablet certainly did help me improve art tremendously (even though I had a short time with it)and convinced me that getting a tablet wouldn't be bad. It's wonderful!
