4 out of 5 stars Not sliced bread, but darn good   July 6, 2008
Let's dispense with the bad:

1) Could use a back light.
2) Better to think of this as a remote for your iPod, and not as a universal remote for all your other home theater equipment. If you need the latter, look at something like a Harmony remote.

Now with the good:

If you have a home theater system, plus speakers in other locations attached to the system, this is a great remote. I have a complicated home theater system, but I also have speakers in the back yard and in a reading room. The only time I listen to my iPod is when I'm in one of these other areas (if I'm in front of the main system I will play the better sounding CDs, thank you very much). This remote allows me to control the iPod almost as well as if the iPod were in my hands. Headphones stink. They either sound bad, are uncomfortable, or both. I can sit back in a comfortable chair, or by the pond, and listen to music over quality speakers, and not get my lazy butt out of the chair just because the record industry subjected me to another crummy song put on an album as filler (yes, I know I could take those songs off the iPod, but I have a large collection, and, as stated previously, I'm lazy).

5 out of 5 stars Great device - and great customer service from Amazon   June 29, 2008
I was at first disappointed with this product. It worked with my satellite receiver, my tuner, my TV, my DVD player -- everything except my iPod! After lots of plugging and unplugging of cables (and gnashing of teeth...), I finally contacted Phillips customer support. They recommended that I return the product for replacement. Amazon is amazing when it comes to replacing defective products. They shipped out a new one immediately, I returned the defective one, and now I'm controlling my iPod -- along with all of the other gadgets -- with one remote. Gotta love that!

5 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly!   May 22, 2008

I purchased the "Phillips SJM3151 Universal Remote for iPod" about a month ago and it works exactly like I hoped it would. I use it becasue I have speakers downstars and outside that are hooked up to my stereo upstairs - so I can plug my iPod into the stereo and use this remote anywhere inside or outside the house to adjust the volume, skip to the next song, change the playlist etc. All you do is plug it in, put your iPod in it, and start using it. I have an 80GB iPod (with about 70GB of music on it) and was thrilled that it connects to the iPod right away (you push the button with the iPod picture on it). The menu options are "Playlists", "Artists", "Albums", and "Songs". When I select any of these menu options my stuff comes up right away, even with 70GB. The screen displays 5 things at a time and you can navagate down (one line) or page down (next 5), which the unit does quickly. The screen goes blank to conserve battery life several seconds after using it. The remote feels solid and has a familiar layout. One thing to mention is that even though this is a Universal Remote, only the iPod can be controlled without "line of sight" to the unit.

I read that some of the other models have to import lists from the iPod when you first set it up. Reviewers of those models said this was a pain becasue it has to re-import when you add or change stuff or if you plug in a different iPod. Not so with this one - you just put any iPod in the dock and start controlling it with this remote.

One minor things I wish it did - I can't start the iPod playing without using the remote. This is becasue when you put it in the dock the iPod changes to that "ok to unplug" screen. Even if I start it playing first, it stops when you plug it into the dock.

To sum it up - simple to use, excellent quality, works like it came with my iPod, love it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Product, Good Value   April 7, 2008

All in all a solid product. Easy to program. Easy to use. Operates smoothly, if not a little slow. I previously owned a DLO Homedock which developed a nasty tendancy of locking up and needing to be reset. I also like the fact that, unlike the DLO Homedock, the Philips Dock does not need to load in the info from the Ipod. No matter which family member is using the dock, it automatically displays their menus and playlists. With the DLO if a different Ipod is inserted you have to go through a process to load it's info into the remote. I also think that having replaceable batteries i the remote is a positive development. With the DLO te remote utilizes hard wired rechargable battery. Over tme it will lose its ability to charge rendering it useless.
Only a couple of minor complaints. When accessing the settings menu through the remote it does not allow for the changing of the EQ settings. A color display would also have been nice.
