5 out of 5 stars Great Blu-ray Player   September 6, 2008
I bought this Blu-Ray player from Amazon's Warehouse Deals store, which saved me about $30 under the list price. It arrived in good shape, in the original box with all accessories that were supposed to be included. If you want an HDMI or component cables, buy them separately (I got my HDMI cables from Amazon at the same time Cables To Go - 40315 - 2M (6.5ft) Velocity HDMI Digital Video Cable (Blue)). The unit was very easy to set up and the menus are user-friendly. I also own a Samsung HDTV and home theater system, and they work perfectly with each other over HDMI and optical audio connections. The obvious drawback, as anyone looking to buy a Blu-Ray player already knows, is that the discs cost more to buy and often to rent - but the picture and sound quality can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars blue ray dvd   September 6, 2008
this dvd is very easy to use. the playing quality of dvd's is exceptionally good. would reccomend this player to all my friends.

3 out of 5 stars decent standalone but PS3 much better   August 28, 2008
I decided to get this unit while my PS3 was being serviced due to a Dead Blu drive. I like the styling of the unit it looks sleek in my entertainment center. compared to my 80 GB PS3 its much quieter. regular DVD playback is a joke compared to my OPPO DV 980H. same for MP3 and CD playback, dont buy this unit for anything more than a blu player. the remote is horrid. thank god for my universal remote. video quality is really good unless your like me and have a PS3 to compare it to. the PS3 beats this unit hands down on video quality. the samsung also has some HDMI Handshake issues with my integra dtc 9.8 prepro. it takes forever for it to dial into a signal... sometimes even comes up no signal then i switch the source back and forth and then it works. the PS3 again dials in much faster and loads faster. I do have to admit the loading times are much better than the first gen units... ive seen some sonys that take 2-3 minutes to load and you cant even tell they are doing anything.
If your in the market for a blu only player that is quiet this is your unit. especially for those hooking it directly to a tv via HDMI.

4 out of 5 stars Samsung BD-P1500   August 28, 2008

This was an upgrade from the original BD-P1000. One of the best things, of course, was the $400 price compared to $1000 for the P1000 (the price of being on the leading edge). The P1500 responds much faster than the P1000. I can't tell much difference in the picture quality (Very good by the way). The P1500 is still grainy when the picture has a lot of black in it.
The P1500 firmware can be updated directly from the web, but downloading a file onto a CD wasn't that big of a deal.
All in all, if I had it to do again I would skip the P1500 and go directly to a 1080P player (but they are $2500).

4 out of 5 stars Just Short of Greatness   August 12, 2008

I've owned this unit for about a month now and feel like I'm fairly conversant with how the player works. First of all, the picture quality and sound quality are great. It's unlike anything I've ever seen. I've had some upconverting DVD players, and the difference is there and highly noticeable. Some negatives: resuming a movie from the middle is pretty much impossible for whatever reason. I press stop, power off the player while it's in resume, turn it back on and it isn't where it was. Instead, it's back at the beginning. A seemingly small thing that drives me nuts. The menu system isn't terribly intuitive either. The remote feels kind of cheap (but I use a Logitech Harmony anyway, so it's less of an issue for me). Those are just some small things that keep this player from great.

My big gripes probably stem from the blu-ray format itself more than the player (and thus the player is not penalized for these gripes). Some studios will put movie previews and trailers before the actual movie starts. With DVDs, you push the menu button and you're taken to the main menu. With blu-ray, you have to advance through the eight or nine previews by chapter. Heck, even getting to the main menu of some of these blu-ray disks is as unintuitive as can be. But most of those issues aren't necessarily with the player, just the format. But it's the hi-def format that won, so we're stuck with it.
