Great player if it would workSeptember 3, 2008 This is such a great improvement over that old large Zen player with speaker! Mostly because it is a nice compact size. And its features seemed to be very user friendly, especially the ability to sync straight from Media Player. Only thing, as has happened to me and my family with about 1/2 of Creative Zen products we buy, it isn't working properly. This one has to be returned for warranteed repair because the screen light went out about one week after purchase.
pointless without softwareAugust 31, 2008 I got this as a compliment to my Zen Vision M, which is full. I wanted another zen so that I could just transfer my existing track info and playlists between the two. My first issue is that the two are not at all compatible in any way, from software to size of the usb ports, nothing is the same.
After charging it, I turned it on and listened to the music that came pre-installed and had no issues with it. The 13 buttons on the front at first threw me for a loop, but after reading the directions got the hang of them quickly. I loved the little speaker. Never tried the earphones.
After a few minutes playing/listening to it, I then went and installed the software. All went well and I registered the product. I then hooked up the player and tried to start the software. It would not open. Clicked till my finger hurt but could not get the software to open. I tried clicking the shortcut, through the program group/start menu and even when into windows explorer and tried clicking the .exe file. Nothing happens. I get an hourglass for a millisecond, then nothing.
I uninstalled and reinstalled. Nothing. I rebooted then reinstalled. Nothing. I uninstalled, rebooted, downloaded the Centrale software from Zen's site rather than use that on the disk I received, installed. Nothing. I spent three hours the first day and never saw the more than the shortcut, never even got the program to open. On the second day, I tried again for another two hours. Nothing. I went to the site and checked knowledge base and forum, nothing.
It will not work with the software from the Vision M. I cannot drag/drop from the Vision M to the Xfi. I can copy from the M to my computer, then drag/drop from there to the Xfi, but this only copies existing tunes and will not rip nor allow me to make playlists.
I am beyond frustrated and disappointed. I'm returning it. I found a refurbished Vision M elsewhere and will get a second one of those.
TornAugust 31, 2008 Well, this is a semi-solid Creative product. It size is a nice change, very nice video quality and superior sound quality. As said before, the x-fi technology is kinda a gimick... the basic sound improvement comes from the sethoscope-like headphones that seal out alot of background noise, and do provide higher highs, and amazingly lower lows. I"m thinking its more the headphones that the technology.
The software isnt that bad... anyone with mediocre computer experience should be able to do well with it.
The player itself is teh problem... it seems cheaply built. While the light plastic used contributes to the light weight, it just seems cheaply made. The silver paint on the back of the unit is easily scratched off. For nearly $300, I'd expect a more durable player.
So, for now, I would suggest buying the new X-fi earphones... but maybe reconsider on the player ;)
Not Too Bad but there is a shortcut on repairAugust 30, 2008 I bought the player a little over a month ago. Even though I had returned the Creative Zen M: 30 because of hard disk failure. Bought it through overstock.com my first mistake. Overstock has basically no electrical knowledge. Ok had the player loved the new 32 gigs filled it up. I had no problem with the programming. Then it crashed. It didnt even say harddisk error woke up one morning and it was on the ground my cat must have knocked it off my computer tower and turned it on. Blank screen that turned green. Amazon has no electrical help either and creative website is a joke. While checking out the zen jukebox reviews stumbled onto pricegrabber.com and it showed some reviews about restarting and holding down the play button and smacking it on your right hand. Guess what it brought me back to the restart screen. After my second attempt of this it cleaned the disk and rebooted the music. This should come on the box. Overwise you will be tempted to return it or send it to one of those websites that promise to fix it and then want an arm and a leg then a tooth and a nail. Would I buy another creative zen? Yeah honestly I love the ease of the software if you have Rhapsody or another download program it is so easy to maintain. Just be wary of the fixing. Now I will just keep an eye on it. And if you can buy the extended warranty on all Creative Zen products. Especially the higher gig and pricepointed ones.

All I've ever wanted was an MP3 player that holds a large capacity and has a speaker. I hate headphones. No one makes that. Until now. Here it is. This Zen X-fi has 32GB on board with an SD slot for another 32GB if you can afford it. I have a 16GB SD card so I now have 48GB to handle all of my music. I like the fact that the SD card is not integrated. I store my music in folders by artist then by album and I want to listen to it in that fashion and that's the way this player plays them when they are on the card. I don't like the way players update their library and put music into categories that I don't want. The only thing missing is bluetooth. Maybe someday.
