Great TV.....for 23 days.....then it completely chokedOctober 2, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Were it not for my current problem, I would rate this TV a 4 or 5. I did exhaustive research on LCD televisions and made repeated trips to stores to compare picture quality and features. I gravitated to this particular set for its small footprint (bezel) around the screen, the exceptional picture quality and the Sony name. I have always known Sony TVs to be high quality and reliable........until now.
I babied this puppy on delivery, as if it were fine crystal. It sits on top of a cabinet, free-standing, with plenty of ventilation in a large room. For 23 days it worked great. Then a powerful windstorm knocked out power in NE Ohio and took down cable across the region. The following day I had the TV on throughout the day as I waited for cable to be restored. Late in the afternoon I noticed vertical lines across the screen instead of simply a blank screen.
The set was totally unresponsive via remote or otherwise. It didn't even work with my Sony DVD player --just random vertical lines and no sound. I called Sony. They put me in touch with their technical repair contractor, QualServe. They sent a tech 8 days later. The guy replaced the heart of the thing....the main processor and circuit board. No change. He was stumped and called Sony. After a long conversation heordered a new LCD screen!! 2 wks for delivery to QualServe then another week for them to send one of their techs out to install the thing.
I am awaiting resolution. When all is said and done, it will be 4 wks of repair time for set I had a mere 23 days.....and given what they're replacing it will essentially be a new TV. My out of pocket costs for the repair? Loss of TV for a month and the bill for the cable I cannot watch. Sony has been responsive and apologetic to a certain point but also unwilling to send a new set in the box.
FOR THOSE ORDERING THROUGH AMAZON --- be advised, I ordered this TV on Amazon from a company called 'OneCall'. Amazon TOTALLY screwed up the purchase and shipping info. Amazon is usually stellar and organized with these things, I do not know what happened. The OneCall people were good to work with however I was surprised they were not more concerned about the mix up.

top notch lcd tvSeptember 21, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Many folks are going for the samsung lcds because the blacks look blacker. but those tv's have a glass screen that reflects everything. This tv is sharper than a xbr4 or xbr5 , those were last years models. the engine in this tv is equivalent to a xbr6. I replaced a great 50 inch sony sxrd tv with this one. Sony's newer 52's didn't have all the features of this one. the s, v, and w's are fine tv's but they don't have deep color the new color standard that future discs will have. Nor do they have x.v. color which is here already and is used in digital photos. this one does. the w does have 24fps or film speed that words with a ps3 or blu ray player to show a movie in it's real speed. Of course this isn't a benefit for older dvd's as they are processed in a 2:3 rate anyways. that means that one frame is dropped for every 3 shown. but for blu ray this feature rocks. And like ALL lcds standard non hd tv looks ok but they don't put standard tv on in showrooms. so people take these tv's home and expect it to look like HD content. this is true for all lcds, plasmas , lcos , dlp's and the rest. But this tv shines with hd content and blu ray. However, I will miss the extra four inches of screen. but this tv is in many ways future proof for a while. the 120hz feature for motion and other features make it one of the best tv's made so far. The toshiba 540 and 550 series are comparible but this tv is the clearest of the new tv's. xbr 7's will come soon but they will be much more expensive. the jump in size from 46" to 52" is also a substantial jump in price. So I can live with a 46" tv with this quality. This tv took 2 days to get to denver. which is great! I picked it up myself as the box and tv are not too large and this means I don't have to hang around waiting for a delivery. I would say that if you have a smaller tv 46' or less go down to ceva wharehouse and get it yourself. This tv though with it's three key features: deep color, x.v. color and 24p or 24 frames per second film speed for blu ray only I would say make this tv in many ways future proof. I knew when I bought the sxrd that new technology wasn't far off that technology is here on the sony z series and it's good enough on the sony to make the tv a keeper for many , many years.
A Sony non-XBR set at at even better price!September 5, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a previous owner of a Sony 40XBR4, I was skeptical of a Sony set that was not one of the XBR series. Consequently, I discovered the "Z" series which has most of the XBR features, but at an even better price.
The KDL-46Z4100/B is one great set with a picture to match. This model doesn't have the x.v color feature, but has all the other bells and whistles of the XBR for hundreds less.
The "Z" series features a TV Guide programming feature. Since most people have either a digital cable box or satellite receiver, I question how many out there could actually make use of this feature.
Checking out the Xross Media Bar setup menu it is easy to get lost in the amazing amount of controls available to the user. This may look like a minus, but it is really a plus.
LCD TVs are known for their slimness, but this model really outdoes the competition. With a one-inch thickness, it should fit most anywhere--especially on the wall.
If you are looking for a state-of-the-art LCD TV, look no farther than the KDL-46Z4100 series. Its picture and features will amaze you.

Wonderful picture! XBR4 is a bit sharper but not enough that taken as a whole this isn't the winner. Plan on using external speakers.
