5 out of 5 stars Were they always like this?   July 17, 2004
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

When I first heard of them was when their single "Trigger" came out. I honestly loved it because of the solos and the type they play. I haven't heard anything like it. So here is my opinions of all of the songs in the cd.

1)Reroute to Remain- I'd give it 94/100 Guitars were catchy and I like the way he sings.....i guess. Song and melody tend to get stuck in my head once in a while. I like it.

2)System-90/100 At first I didn't like it because of the beginning but later on was when it got better....and the usual can't get it out of my head sort of thing.

3)Drifter- 85/100 I can never get heavily into this song. But contrary to the downfall it seems like a great song to hear live. The only thing I fell in love with in this song is that little mini solo near the ending.

4)Trigger-95/100 Very beginning is when this would be the only song that I would only listen to. There's so many good things I could say about this song. The opening to the song, solos, chorus etc. But later on this song just got overplayed so many times and it seems a little too much. But it's always good to hear.

5)Cloud Connected- 95/100 Quite questioning in the beginning, I was starting to wonder if I was listening to the same cd. But I like the melodicness included in the song. It's one of my favorites.

6)Transparent-100/100 My absolute top 3 favorite. The way that it builds up in the beginning, it's just so cool the way they present it. My favorite part is in the chorus, it's very unique with the vocals, background etc. And I got to give it to the lyrics, brilliant. Yeah, it's a very unique song, I love listening to it no matter what even if Im in the shower it's entertaining to hear it.

7)Dawn of a New Day- 94/100 I think it's good to hear when I'm dozing off or whatever. To me, it has a cool vibe to it like a somewhat calmness flow attached to it. So whenever I'm frustrated or caught up in an anger situation I know I could always count on listening to this song.

8)Egonomic- 93/100 Whenevr I hear this song, I tend to think it's a sing along whenever the chorus comes up. So yeah, it has some crunchy sounds contained in it, with some semi-melowness in the break part. Time after time I actually have grown to like it.

9)Minus- 100/100 Among of my top 3 favorites. This actually seems like a classic. (Yes, classic) I say classic because, this song contains all the elements that needs to be considered a classic. First there's the hard-rock crap slapped in there, and then they have the sadness etched in. Along with the very sad lyrics to be contained. In the break part is when they have that guitar break. It's like the song is it's own story by the sound and lyrics. That's how I considered it a classic in my eyes.

10)Dismiss the Cynics- 95/100 I like the way this song is presented even in the chorus. There's crunchy-ness in there. The lyrics are undoubtfully touching. The best part is at the break, where it's almost silience and all of a sudden.....drums kick in and.....the uprising guitars building up more and more by the second. Great Song.

11)Free Fall- 100/100 Another of the top 3. The beginning when it has the jukebox opening and the guitars pop in. And the way that he sings when it starts up. I have nothing against anything whatsoever in the song. Everything in here is no doubt the best. The is my favorite song, of not just from the cd but from all time.

12)Dark Signs- 90/100 This seems like a rip off from another song on this cd, but like a continuium. Catchy chorus too.

13)Metaphor- 99/100 Best of the slow songs I have ever heard. I couldn't even believe this is from the same band. According to the credits, there's supposed to be some chick singing too?? I think I could hear it but i'm still not sure. Aside from that, I am in love with the lyrics. It's just tearful the part when it's on break and drums kick in and he says "Break me open The Desprate Cry" it's so sad it's just destined to be classic. Also great to listen to when feelin down.

14)Black and White- 95/100 Seems like any mundane song a rock band could come out with. It has the same elements to fit the description. Chorus seems pretty catchy. To me, this song is like just any song I would hear on the radio.

My question is why people diss this album? It's not thay bad, they have great solos here and there. They say its all crappy compared to previous releases. I would rather check out their early stuff to see why these people are being brats whining about this cd. It's clearly that the worst album recorded, I don't see what the fuss is about until I check them out more.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, not as good as old though.   July 14, 2004
When I bought this CD I had mixed opinions about it. It has some good new material, Reroute to Remain, Trigger, Dark Signs, Clouds Connected, all good new stuff. It just doesn't compare to old In Flames, Jester Race, Colony, Clayman, they probably won't put out anything as gnarly as that again, put they still kick ass. The melody of their msuic has downgraded a bit, you can still find some, Trigger and Dark Signs are the best guitar lines on the CD by far, the rest of the songs sound a little the same and aren't as detailed. The clean vocals don't mix with their style that well, they are about melody. It's still a good CD, worth buying and all, but you should buy some of their old stuff first, it's better.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing And Generic   July 12, 2004
In Flames has officially lost their touch. WIth this album, they moved themselves into the generic mainstream metal genre, and in doing so, turned themselves into "just another" band. Though Cloud Connected is a pretty good song, the rest of the album is dull and monotone, with a few extra notes here and there. I loved every album they made before this one, and I've hated every album after it. A true shame.

4 out of 5 stars 4.3 stars for me.........   July 11, 2004
I LOVE CHANGE. And you should to. With this 2002 release, Reroute to Remain offered up a taste of the new In Flames. To get straight to the point, I call this my 2nd favourite In Flames release.
.
"System" has a standout riff with AMAZING lyrical arrangements. My only concern is the song begins with a frantic riff backed by manic vocals, only to cut abruptly into "...Slow I go" (thats irony), still....it derails a potentially classic song. 4/5
.
"Drifter" from the get-go shows the old In Flames with their new muddy sound. Lots of melody here, a catchy chorus, and this time around much better musical arrangements than System (clean and death vocals complement eachother). 5/5
.
"Trigger" a single, has a dreamlike chorus and thats about it....while the versus are playing, its like your waiting for the chorus to erupt! The clean vocals are MUCH better than SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE. As the vocals are very very well produced "Collect some stars to shine for you" 4/5
.
"Cloud Connected" another single, showcases a little techno/dance music. "A True headbangers song". Over time however, it will not stand tall in the storm. Not saying the song is weak but any means, merely the best is yet to come! 4/5
.
"Transparent" The heaviest song on the album, Drop D and extremely nu metal. It doesnt make me sick to my stomach, as some melody does exist. I usually skip over this track, but maybe.....it was poor track placement. Not a filler, a dark song.....just read the lyrics (perhaps the best on the album). "Spend more time with the broken, see what became of their mistake, and you'll know your lost when you feel transparent". 4/5
.
"Dawn of a new day" is almost a breath of fresh air, from one extreme to the ballad on the album (another is "Metaphor" track 13". Beautifully written, devoid of any holes. This song is nearly complete. 4.5/5
.
"Egonomic" Jumps back into high gear, with a thrashy number that could of been pulled of the "Colony" Record. This is the only song that doesnt take a 'breath' (nu-metal stop stars). Major riffs cut way this under three minute track. Definately reminiscent of Soilwork.....if you like this song, look into Soilwork. Again, the techno elements are evident, popping up in the ever so cathcy chorus... 5/5
.
"Minus" Easily a song that could of replaced "Satelites and Astronauts" of Clayman. Again, a lot of melody here. 4/5
.
"Dismiss the cynics" reminds me of "Transparent", in that, the intro is very muddy and heavy...THE BASS!!!! oh my god, intoxicating! In Flames, truly have accomplished a lot with Reroute, as many elements could very well be defined in this song. Again, the Keyboards build the song up, and perhaps give Reroute the "edge". 4.5/5
.
"Free Fall" AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This should of been the first single! Quite amazing! Inspiring to say the least. Its beings with a "twinkle twinkle little star" feel to it, crunching into the best rock riff on the album. At this point....In Flames have already fulfiled every expectation. Note* My favourite lyrics exist here "Ill never seem to understand, the time the place and who I am, DEFINE away to stary alive, its like Im living a lie..." - Brilliant fadeout! 5/5
.
"Dark Signs" A good song. Nothing special here. Very good in sections, just a boring chorus....However, as usual, half way through the song In Flames deliver some sweet guitar riffs. My least favourite on the album. The closest to "filler". 3.5/5.
.
"Metaphor" PERFECT TRACK PLACEMENT! There is nothing like an emotional ballad at the end of an album, and a classic one too. This made my Top 20 songs of all time, sitting in at no. 20 (smiles). "Let me in, Ill bury the pain". Simple but effective, Metaphor edges out "Dawn of a new day" and is a complete ballad. 5/5.
.
"Black and White" the albums closer, has patches of numetal headbanging, yet, Anders sounds like he is on drugs in this song... (u'll know what I mean in the softer parts - sounds disorientated). This song builds up every minute, with the late inclusion of keyboards. A good closer, not In Flames' best, yet, edges out "Bottled" "The new word" and "Dead god in me". 4.5/5
.
"Reroute to Remain" the album opener, didnt interest me for reasons I cant explain. I guess.....it was a little slow for my liking. Although it has a killer riff, I know whats waiting and thats "System"....a better riff awaits! 3/5.
.
14 songs of conscious insanity? Indeed. However, I felt the album could of done with 13. Just my opinion of course....it needed some tightening to be worthy of 5 stars, so Ive gave it 4.3/5. I am in favour of the "evolving" concept...With that said, for the diehards who like "The Jester Race" and "Whoracle", "Reroute to remain" is probably not for you. For those who welcome change in music and dont like "running in a wheel" hehe.....check out Reroute to Remain. Take if from me, listen for yourself, not just once and not just twice. It had taken me a good 30 spins to enjoy this album.

2 out of 5 stars Eeek...   July 7, 2004
Well, you cannot blame the decline of the Gothenberg scene on In Flames' 2002 release. In fact, you can blame this release for making the scene look even more profitable than ever. The famed Gothenburg "sound" is attributed mostly to this band of bands, who's classic releases such as Lunear Strain, Whoracle and The Jester Race showed this band was also one of the most talented groups to emerge onto the metal frontier since Obituary put the state of Flordia on the map with their unique brand of death metal.

Reroute to Remain however, as the title could be suggesting, is a different path, a new creative direction that is much simpler than the patterns of past releases. Each of the past two prior to Reroute showed signs of more commercialism in this band's future, with Colony and Clayman scoring key singles and widespread acclaim from younger fans, but drew criticism from longtime hardcorests.

This album shows the band as hardly the same group of guys that produced eye opening metal masterworks in the 90's, with the singles coming closer to radio and the fanbases gathering larger by the day, In Flames could quickly become the next European product to sell a million records within a few years. Most metal cds are lucky to get that far in a lifetime. (we wont go into the fact that Back in Black is now #6 all time) However, the oversaturated nature of this "evolution" corrodes the ears of a longtime Flamer.

If you would like to see this band closer to its past glory, the 2004 release "Soundtrack to Your Escape" is closer to form, surprising as it may seem. We may only have to bear one Reroute to Remain, like Megadeth fans had to endure only one Risk. (an album i actually like) To the credit of the Flames though, at least they attempted something different, albeit unsuccessfully in many true metal minds. Don't label these guys as sellouts for one album...they are still In Flames. Trust me.
