| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.ca Over the course of Cord Lund's decade-long solo career, he has remained the perennial cowboy, bringing with him a torch, a twang, and a penchant for penning lyrics about riding ranges and rustlin' steer. While Lund's previous incarnation--frontman for indie/punk outfit The Smalls--was more political in nature, he has avoided the topic in his solo work, until 2007's Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! Rather than tackle present-day war stories, however, Lund has chosen to detail historical battle tales in his tunes. It all begins with the stoic sounds of opening track/lead single I Wanna Be In The Cavalry within which Lund proclaims I'll wield my lance as the ponies dance/and the blackguards fire their guns to the accompaniment of a militaristic drum beat. The disc's title track delivers the perspective of soldiers through the ages, from those fighting on steeds with Custer at Little Big Horn to present day Mounties. With an old-school twang a la Gatlin Brothers or Marty Robbins, most notably in the two-stepping Lament for Lester Cousins' and the country waltz of The Horse I Rode In On," Lund's sounds and stories remain truly timeless. Bonus points for the latter-disc reprise of the aforementioned Calvary track, this time slowed down considerably and featuring CBC favourite Geoff Berner on accordion.--Denise Sheppard

Can't get the tunes out of my head January 10, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My son introduced me to this CD - I had no great expectations, but the lyrics are great and the music very difficult to forget. I find myself singing the songs in my head. It has been a long time since that has happened.
