5 out of 5 stars THE METAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR!   August 5, 2008
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

Over the years, there have only been a small handful of bands that have released three consecutive #1 albums; Van Halen, Metallica and U2 to name a few. Disturbed is part of that group. This disc is the band's follow up to "Ten Thousand Fists" and there's no danger of their winning streak being broken any time soon as this is lucky number 3 for the band. When the band released their first CD, "The Sickness", in 2000, they were lumped in with a batch of other new bands at the time under the 'Nu Metal' tag but that label really didn't fit this band as Disturbed stood apart from that crowd with more melodic songs and David Draiman's unique vocal prowess and trademark grunts. Within a few years the band rose to the top of the hard rock mountain, garnering both critical acclaim and commercial success with over 10 million albums sold to date. The band soon rose to the forefront as one of the most important and relevant bands in the hard rock/heavy metal scene. This CD is the latest chapter of that success story.
The first single/video released was "Inside The Fire" and like the CD cover; it burned up the airwaves with its scorching-hot licks and pedal-to-the-metal driving rhythm, the lyrics of which were inspired by the tragic passing of a former girlfriend of David's; more on this can be found on their MySpace website which includes David's video message against suicide, as well as the incredibly powerful video for the song.
"Perfect Insanity" was the next release and this one is quintessential Disturbed with David's legendary "Oh ah ah ah ah", only done backwards. Believe me it works! As for the other 12 songs on the CD, there's no point in writing what the best tracks are because each and every one is a powerful slab of molten metal and offer the listener creativity crafted snapshots of the band at this point in their careers. There's absolutely zero per-cent filler here.
With the 'Big M' (Metallica) lost somewhere in 'self-awareness' and 'navel-gazing land' and after releasing the fiascos that are "St. Anger" and "Some Kind Of Monster" they are no doubt working their butts off trying to redeem themselves in the eyes and hearts of their former fans, in the meantime Disturbed continues to rise to the top of the heavy metal hierarchy, giving hard rock music fans something to hope for, and they continue to deliver in spades with each new CD released. This is definitely the Hard Rock album of the year.

I love Disturbed. They are in my opinion the best metal band out there. The combination of solid guitar riffs and unbeatable vocals by their very unique lead singer is unparalleled.

Fav songs: Inside the Fire, The Night, Enough

One tip though, download this album off itunes because you get 4 exclusive live tracks from their previous albums. So good!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars An incredible mature-sounding album; however they're playing it safe..   June 3, 2008

WHAT AN AMAZING ALBUM.

to sum it up, it is Ten Thousand Fists amplified.

songs to listen out for are "The Night", "Haunted", "Torn", and "Facade".
those 4 completely blew me away.

'The Night' just may be their best song they've ever made.

'Haunted' is a very close runner-up as well, showing fabulous progression and could have been THE defining song of this band had it been a tad longer.. in my opinion.

The album shows the maturity of the band and that they've gotten better at creating a song thats rich and full and tells a story, complete with great hooks and guitar solos. They chose a great song to both begin and close out the album. They even had a song fade at the end, which to my knowledge off hand is the first time they've done that.

that being said,
i really wish that they'd expand out into 1 or 2 songs that have a different sound,
whether it be a slower song like "darkness" on the Believe album or an epic song liek "Overburdened" from Ten Thousand Fists...

both showed potential that they could go that route and be successful.
With this album, yes they've matured and it sounds amazing.. but it feels like they've hit a comfort zone with their fanbase and they're playing it safe. I wanna see some risks being taken!

All in all, i'm not disappointed in the slightest. If you're a fan already of Disturbed, go check it out immediately.

My personal nitpicking aside, it's their BEST album to date.
