4 out of 5 stars Mood music at its best, with stellar musical talent   November 16, 2008
I'm partial to the Southern jams and uptempo stuff that kicked off our relationship. These guys were breath of fresh air pickled with twang and moonshine when they launched Holy Roller Novocaine. This was a great start.

These boys were not content to rest idle on the twang groove... they step to new styles with each new album, and they do so with unmatched competence. Now - I'm not a fan loyal to a specific sound, I'm loyal to the talent and to the imagination they bring to the sounds they choose to explore.

If you're looking for Molly's Chambers, Knocked Up, My Party, Four Kicks, or California Waiting, you're definitely going to be disappointed. There are elements of those tunes on this album, but these elements don't define the experience. Instead, you'll see these new songs as a natural growth for the Followill Fellows.

The predominant flavour of the album is mood, a nice meandering jammy sticky sweet mood. The album is experimental yet accessible.

Reading some of the reviews, I see a lot of disappointment -- I hope you don't let that prevent you from discovering a solid album. It's a keeper -- I guarantee you that these hooks will stay strong for the next 5-10 years. This is something rarely accomplished by young bands these days, so take the risk and get the disc.

Cheers,
Michael

4 out of 5 stars Night Music   October 30, 2008
Great album! For sure more slow jams than the last albums, but the don't call it "Only By the Night" for no good reason.
The quality of the sound is very good.
Worth checking out.

Not a bad album, but pails in comparision to their earlier albums. Good if you dig slow jams.

2 out of 5 stars Nickeleon   September 25, 2008

Wow... they sure embraced their inner Nickeleon on this album. "Sex On Fire" is one of the dumbest songs ever written, with a pointless video to match, and their utterly predictable formula for the record shows itself in spades with "Use Somebody" and "Be Somebody." It's Nickelback for indie kids. Sure, their sound has changed over time, but they aren't getting any better, just different. That means they don't have a sound of their own. They're a patchwork of dick and whore anecdotes and stage posturing. At least Moetley Cruee and KISS were honest about their intentions instead of pretending to be actual viable artist. Don't kid yourself into thinking this music will last. It's bubblegum, not the Beatles. More songs about sex and themselves, and a whole lot of squonking...
