A game where you run around chasing and trying to capture monkeys using different weapons,that is what "Ape Ascape: On The Loose" for PSP is about.While it doesn`t seem like there is much of a story here,this platformer title is actually something really diverse for the PSP and was good enough to be released for a second time as a "Greatest Hits" game along with a few other titles like "Twisted Metal:Head On" and Wipeout Pure".Needless to say if you like monkeys you will like "Ape Escape" a lot!
A bad guy controls monkeys with head devices he by whatever way he did that installed on them.His plan is to rule the world and replace humans as the superior race,weird isn`t it?Now the monkeys have gone evil and you must capture them.Its as simple as story can get but the Ape Escape games were quite succesfull both on the PS2 and PSP,that simple quest to capture monkeys might not seem great but some monkeys are challenging and some are pretty funny at times.
Some things you can do are pretty fun like driving the tank control an rc car.But in most parts its frustrating,as at times you have to look at some place with the analog,move and then press the button to do a specific action that you have more chances to miss than do correctly when it could have been easier with two analogs.Also the loading times,they aren`t so long but there are many!Just to go on the menu there is a loading then pick something,loading and it takes forever...Another thing the game ain`t one you will play for a long time,you are in fact likely to get bored after a few days.
The graphics are nothing impressive but they aren`t ugly,still they aren`t so great either i would say they are alright but don`t expect much on that point.The controls could have been better,yet the PSP is limited in controls because it only has one analog and the Ape Escape games on PS2 relied a lot on the two analogs.The actions are quick to learn and easy but overral could have been better overral.The gameplay could also have been better but its o.k.
The game also offers a few mini games that are quite fun they are: Specter Boxing,Ape Ping Pong,Kake Attacks and Snow Kidz Racing.Each are unique and really fun those mini games are entertaining to say the least.You can play with a friend on multiplayer and the things you can do are limited(tought playing mini games with a friend is cool)and there is no online so on that point its not terrific.
Overrall "Ape Escape:On The Loose" is acceptable and a good effort as well as a diverse title buck lacks something i can`t quite tell what it is,but it is lacking something.Its probably worth it for a kid but for a more serious gamer it might be boring,Ape Escape is barely 3 stars.I can`t quite recommend it but i can`t say its bad either.
