 A shame about the interface ... April 1, 2008
I like DnD. I play the pen and paper. I play DDO. I played through all the Gold box and Bioware titles. This was so close to a home run, except the interface cripples the game. Game play and scenarios are true to 3.5 rules set. The rules accuracy makes the game a great tactical experience. In fact I prefer the combat here, to Final Fantasy Tactics. Spell effects and combat feats are all faithfully reproduced. The interface is the downfall of the game. To carry out any simple action you have to navigate through at least three drop down menus, and look for your action related modifiers you may want to add to it. This is often time consuming and frustrating. I can live with it during combat. It sorta works ok, if a bit clunky. Where it is a pain in the be-hind is when your doing inter-party management, selling off, purchasing etc etc between missions. This turns into easily a 30 minute administrative chore that just isnt fun. Whats more horrible, is I have managed twice now to back too far out of the menus and accidentally revert to the main menu, loosing my current game, and 30 minutes of admin work. Bottom line, combat works, is fun and rewarding. The interface is enough of a burden I can't recommend the game, except to the lovers of this ruleset. I won't be finishing this game.

DDT has fared very badly at the hands of the reviewers. I have been playing sporadically with the game for several weeks and believe the reviewers to be unfair. Admittedly, the learning curve is very steep. This is not a game for people who just pick up a game without looking at the manual. It is a remarkably faithful and detailed implementation of the authentic D & D 3.5 rules. The game experience is the very opposite of the Diablo experience. Personally, I find it to be a refreshing change. However, don't get this game unless you are prepared to make a considerable investment in mastering the interface and the strategic requirements.
