A Great RTS July 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
You know you have a great game when it reaches a great audience than just your average devotee to a game genre. Personally, I was never into the RTS, with all the material management, as well as the pace that some can take. Before playing this game the last RTS was Dune that's how long it's been since the last time I played one. However, I was pleasantly surprised at Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, I really enjoyed the presentation the game takes, a more comical and cartoony feel, with a huge amount of depth to the game. I got it yesterday and finished it in one day, but I focused on diplomacy and technology. This game can be massive if done differently, if you're into waging war with neighbouring cities, you can, you can drop a nuke on them, bomb them, attack with samurai, I went the route of Japanese, so I could command the samurai. There are different leadership models you can undertake, despot, republic, democratic, feudal, communist, monarchy all of which have specific specializations, you can build culture with world wonders, universities, libraries, cathedrals. You can build economic juggernauts with marketplaces, trading posts, and mining. There is a lot to do, and it all adapts to the leadership model you decide on, you can build relationships good or bad with other civilizations, share technology and knowledge, or just build a huge army and take it over, you can explore the world. This game plays very deep, but very simple as well, which makes this game a great one for casual RTSers who enjoy just building with very little material and people management, to more intense allocation of what you got.
There's a great deal of re-playablility with this game, with multiple difficulty settings, as well as different leaders like Cleopatra, or Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Ghandi, Catherine the Great, just to name a few, all bringing something different to the table. The world is yours to build or destroy, make allies or make enemies the game has nothing but choice with it.
One drawback however, the jibberish, with the talk, there are advisors that'll pop in and out of the game, which makes it that much easier, but essentially all they do is spout that similar talk as with the Sims, which does get bothersome, but that's easy to get around, just quickly click through the talk or just turn off the advisor all together. Asides that, there's nothing wrong with this game, it's got a great art style to it, and there's lots of fun to be had with this game the game succeeds in every aspect, and I will be replaying it a few times at different levels and different leaders just to see what can be done.
This is a great game, get it and enjoy.
