5 out of 5 stars One of the best RPG's in a long time, and the best on the 360!   February 26, 2008

This is a really great and fun RPG. I am a long time fan of the final fantasy, dragon quest, star ocean etc games. This is game is a great start to a terrific franchise.

The story is really nice, and the voice acting is pretty good, although a little cheesy at times.

There are load times and such, but nothing different than any other rpg that I have played before. Pretty standard when it comes to loading.

The graphics are top notch, a few minor stutters here and there, but nothing to complain about thats for sure. Does not in anyway detract from the game or ruin the experience in any way what so ever, that goes for the load times as well. They do not distract from the game what so ever.

The combat is great as well. If you have played any other JRPG before you will get the basics, but this game adds its own flare to it.

Overall it is great game. I have zero regrets about buying the game. I am very glad that I did purchase it and that it is apart of my gaming collection!

3 out of 5 stars Holy Load Times   February 15, 2008

Lost Odyssey, the much anticipated JRPG, from the maker of Blue Dragon and some of the original Final Fantasy games, Hironobu Sakaguchi. Anyways, after Blue Dragon went down in more or less failure with its very traditional RPG gameplay, which is a huge problem with JRPGs apparently, with the many cut scenes, and turned based battles, Lost Odyssey learned nothing from what hindered Blue Dragon, as far as making a new game, for a new and very fickle videogaming audience, the traditional turn based videogame interface for RPGs doesn't have the gameplay revolution that everyone is looking for with games, most want the real-time fighting.

However, this is my issue with this game, I don't mind the classic turn based gameplay of RPGs, especially with the boss difficulty being what it is with this game, it'll require the player to think about how to fight as well as the formation and the magic attacks, basically all the monsters can dish out a good amount of damage on your party. Also to the physical attack system where the player must time the release of the right trigger is a good addition making the gameplay a little more frantic if the gamer isn't paying attention with the attacks the odds of dying is increased even with the regular battles. The major problem with this game are the load times, this game is constantly loading, from the short loading roughly 10-20 seconds on all the battles, to 1 minute of loading with the characters moving into different sections of a city or any place, even with the many cut-scenes, and there is a lot of cut scenes which are very amazing looking, however, with the load times the story loses a little with the disruption. Also, one would think with all the load times there wouldn't be as many technical issues, but there are, still lots of framerate issues, and sputtering all really take away from the immersion with this game. A next generation game should not have these massive load times, I realize that with more information coming through the machine to generate better and crisper graphics and sounds. But why would a developer release a game with such "amazing" presentation that doesn't even run that well, and requires so much loading. The 3rd disc as an example, there is about half an hour cut scenes to move the story forward, however, with the simplest change in scene or camera angle on a character took loading, the scene could've been 30 seconds but it would still take about a minute to load, now that is flawed performance. Also it shows a major failing of the 360, the memory on the machine is storage memory not drive memory, it is not geared to have pieces of it installed on the machine to help it cut on load times. This is something PS3 has started to address, and hopefully 360 will too just for a better gaming experience.

The story is interesting though, you play as Kaim, an immortal with no memory of the past 1,000 or so years of his life who is set with the task of discovering what's happening to the world and how it's slowly falling apart; the entire time Kaim will remember bits and pieces of his life, which can be interesting, however, with the load times and the fact that much of the recovered memory for Kaim are text pop-ups against these abstract images to show time and change, however, having to read constantly isn't a great thing especially considering there is already a lot to read with the dialogue between the main characters and NPCs. But as the game progresses Kaim will learn more and more about himself, of course with the help of his "friends". But guess what Kaim is that standard character found in many RPGs, the cold and brooding loner, who doesn't want friends, wow, what a departure. There are other characters too, like Jensen, who is supposed to be the smart crackin' magic user, and spunky Seth, a girl pirate and immortal, who antagonizes Jansen at every turn. There are some interesting characters, but with partial voice acting which counts against the game, I mean with Mass Effect, you had 100% voice acting, massive character customization as well as storylines for each different character, yes there were load times, but not as bad as this game, and it was 50+ hours of gameplay on one disc.

Lost Odyssey, itself has an interesting story, however, the characters are more or less set with little to no customization except for rings and equipment, which isn't a good thing especially with RPGs, like Mass Effect and Oblivion, that allow for character creation as well as equipment modification. This game lacks a great many things that would put up there as far as being a premier RPG, how could this game be considered a great RPG? With the turned based gameplay, a lack of creation and with the technical problems, the high watermark has been set in the next generation with Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect, this game just doesn't cut it in this new gaming universe, but it still has very nice visuals (when the graphical sputtering isn't obvious), sounds, with some voice acting, and an interesting backstory; however, with the load times and the very traditional combat system, with linear storyline and set characters this game is more a game for devotees to the classic RPG formula, which tauts a 50+ hour gaming experience with 4 discs, all jammed into the Xbox 360 case, three on top of each other and one in a separate sleeve, all just wanting to get scratched. But I'm sure many will enjoy the pacing and story, but you'd have to be a fan of the game genre, and by fan I mean fanatic, there are some good parts to this game, but it's a tough one to sell especially with the very traditional way this game was made and developed also the constant loading is a killer too. I realize also that there is a difference between RPGs and JRPGs, it is just disappointing that with so many great games coming out with the next gen label attached that some developers are still churning out the same old gameplay, character types and models, and with so many technical issues.

Lost Odyssey could've been a great game, but with a lack of vision it has suffered and has only catered to a very specific crowd instead of hitting the entire market.
