Too Human is amazing August 26, 2008 The game is worth playing, check out gamefocus.ca for a real good review on the title
Too Human took TOO Long for TOO Little August 22, 2008 "Too Human", the new 'epic' series from Silicon Knights has finally been released after years, specifically 10 years of being delayed and in developement has final made it to the Xbox 360, but in place of the roaring great reviews and the monstrous splash that other "AAA" titles like GTA 4 or Halo 3 have made, "Too Human" came up more with a whimper followed by wetting itself, this isn't as big or great a title as originally believed, and one would think two things with a game that takes this long to finish first that it is so great that it had to wait for technology to catch up to what they wanted, or it had way too many issues in development, either way 10 years is way too long especially for a game like this. "Too Human" failed in re-telling the essential backstory of Baldur, however, this is a decent game, which has the potential of improving and needs to be improved greatly if there's to be a trilogy. The game begins with Baldur, a cybernetic Norse god and super warrior, but with a definate lack of proper character development as well as some real pathos, Baldur's character is nothing more than a lot of brooding with no real character evolution, sure at the end there is discovery of what's happened to Baldur, but it's very obvious and overall the story isn't a great one and it doesn't drive the action enough, so Baldur could be lil' Baldur Smith from down the road; thusly, the RPG aspect to this action/RPG game falls a little on its face.
The action, however, in "Too Human" is done very well but with some noticeable flaws such as camera issues and sometimes targetting, but bouncing off enemies and upgrading the character (with the skill trees, which depends on the character that is used) and armour as well as the weapons with the runes. The character can 're-spec' your points that you've allocated in the skill tree, but that costs money to re-map the skill points. Also having played the game completely, the game restarts with the current character as is when the first game was ended, so Baldur can become extremely powerful, and the game does get much better this way. One of the most frustrating parts of this game is massive amount of death which is directly linked to the difficulty of the bosses and the shear volume of enemies that will swarm Baldur, so get confortable because you'll be stuck watching the same cinematic with this stirring music and a Valkyrie will decend from the heavens, which can take a sometime and you'll be watching this cut-scene a lot your first time around in this game, which isn't a great thing and there's no way to skip this scene and it'll happen so many times it'll only magnify the frustration. Also the NPC allies are also very, very useless and only become a factor when they can become zombified when you're fighting Helheim, then Baldur will be the one they're killing, which is amazing because as allies they're useless but as enemies they're deadly. But overall as Baldur becomes more powerful the combat is extremely satisfying especially when the melee weapons that can has over 1000 in power, the baddies will be getting ruined, and there will be less death, there'll always be that frustration of you dying, and there is no healing only enemies maybe dropping health on occasion.
This game is also at most a 10-15 hour game, which way too short by RPG standards even the worst RPG games are roughly 30-40 hours, also there are no side-quests, the Aesir are the protectors of the humans in the game, it doesn't seem that Baldur or the other Aesir do that much protecting of humans, not like in Diablo, which can be seen as one of the major influences of "Too Human". I would think there would be more interaction and questing for these humans, almost like bounties for certain monsters that rampaging in an area, or keeping the peace, but that's not the case this game rises and sets on the linear storyline, it would've been cool if the player could venture out of the city and see more then just a 4 huge dungeons, which might be done purposefully considering that the Aesir, the organization of gods that protect the humans is somewhat detacted from the humans they are supposed to be protecting, thematically the game hints at the loss of faith in the Aesir. But with no real confirmation of this the city you inhabit is very nice to look at but essentially it's there only to repair armour and weapons, and forward the story on, there is zero conversation with the humans, yes there is ca chance of catching pieces of conversation that'll just re-iterate what is already known with the cut-scene.
Overall, "Too Human" is good enough, as far as gameplay and addictive hoarding is concerned. However, at times it gets bogged down with the high concept it tries to undertake and misses its mark with the lack of a real story. This game has been getting slaughtered by reviewers either making this game mediocre or just average, which is understandable, there is a great deal with this game that is both good and bad, and perhaps too much was expected from this game considering the 10 year development time involved, and on the merit of the 10 year delay the game is a failure. This game should improve greatly in the sequels, they've got the combat format down and there something to the game, but it does need a great deal of fine tuning with the story, side-quests, as well as the linear nature of the game, it must become a more open world RPG. But there is a chance this game might go the way of "Advent Rising" another massive disappoint and somewhat innovative game that was set for trilogy but there was just too much wrong with the game to justify the sequel. Try this game out, the first time the game is played you'll be frustrated emmensely with large amount of times Baldur dies, but as the game progresses and when it's played a second time it only gets better. Here's hoping that this will be a great learning process and hopefully Silicon Knights comes back with stronger story and questing elements.
