| Customer Reviews:
Maddeningly addictive. September 29, 2008 This game is just about the best ever example of a "dark horse" game I have ever played. I bought it SOLELY on a recommendation. My understanding of the game, as explained to me by a friend of mine who works at GameStop was that it was part Amplitude, part King Arthurs world (I am old!), and part Lemmings. That is kind of true.
It's basically a side scroller, where you act as the God of the Patapons. They rely on you to motivate them by drumming tribal beats out to do everything from walking to attacking, etc. There is a rival tribe that is trying to kill off the poor little Patapons, so they look to you to bring them to glory!
The game uses the 4 face buttons as four different drums. There is a subtle backbeat happening at all times, and your job is to play the action beats along to the rhythm. If you get 10 phrases in a row on time, the Patapons enter Fever mode, which makes them run faster, do more damage, etc. Fever mode is so amazing when you get the hang of it, it really motivates you to practice and get better at the game.
I would compare this game, now after playing it for about 5-6 hours, as being very similar in approach as Elite Beat Agents for the DS. I say this because the game is incredibly addictive, yet very accessible. That is a rare combination on ANY platform, let alone a handheld.
I have owned just about every console/handheld since the Atari Gemini, and this is one of the top 10 games I have ever played for sure, right up there with Half Life, Tetris, Super Mario Kart, and all the greats. This is a reason to own a PSP...seriously. If this was the only PSP game you ever owned, you would still find it was worth the investment.
Brilliant game but you must have rythm July 12, 2008 This is one of the most creative and unique games I have come across. It has often seemed to me recently that new games were stagnating a bit. By that I mean that most new games were a variation of a common theme, more racing games, more first person shooters, etc. So this game was a revelation, very unique and very interesting. The characters are great. The sounds of the game are addictive (you will be humming pata-pata-pata-pon to you yourself for days). The graphics are 2D and quite creative as you can see from the screen shots above.
My personal problem with the game is my horrible sense of rhythm which is a very limiting factor if you want to play this game for long. If you are confident that you can keep a beat then this is a great game. If you can't dance to save your life it still might be worth a look but be warned.
