5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece for MP fans   July 10, 2004
For those of us who enjoy Marcy Playground and have waited too long for their third effort, mp3 is a thrill. Wozniak's perfectly nasal voice is put to great effect on yet another set of songs that range from fun to somber to downright morbid at times, but the band never loses its sense of humor. "Deadly Handsome Man" is the highlight here, another self-deprecating and ironic ode to superficiality. I also loved "Rock and Roll Heroes" and "Death of a Cheerleader". More than any other band, MP manages to hook me on the first listen of each album - there is just an overwhelming sense that these guys are having fun (packaged pop be damned!). It's a shame that great alternative pop like this does not get more attention - it is mellow and fun and all about having a good time. If you enjoyed the first two MP discs, this one will not disappoint. If you didn't, this one probably will not appeal either.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic drivel.   June 19, 2004
This is uninspired, muddled music. It contains no sign of the talent that expressed itself in the previous two albums. The lyrics are poorly written and incomplete. MP3 is best described as a collection of half songs without any message or story for the listener.

"Jesse Went to War" is the highlight of the album, but it suffers from little problems with the vocals and rythms that could have been dealt with had anyone been paying attention. It also borrows far too much from Shapeshifter. The remaining songs are narcissistic fluff or pandering teen pop rock. Many suffer from using melodies and riffs borrowed from others. MP is giving you the opportunity to purchase generic alternative rock sounds that you've heard a million times before, and your local garage bands would do a comparable job with them.

If you've got teen angst, you'll love it. People who left that part of their life behind sometime ago will find the album boring and unoriginal, just like the album title and cover art. If you were hoping for the brilliant compositions and meaningful or at least polished lyrics MP is known for, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stand the 2 second reviewer   June 17, 2004
This cd is simply amazing. If you are a fan of either of the previous MP albums, I see no reason why you should love this one any less.

All the familar Marcy Playground parts are their. Same voice with great singing, great tunes with some interesting song structures. A few musical embelishments with strings here and there, etc. In short, MP delivers another excellent cd that was worth the wait. As with previous releases, there may be a song or two that takes awhile for you to enjoy, but given time, you probably will.

Yes, there is one short riff in "Blood in Alphabet Soup" that sounds similar to a Nirvana tune, big deal. One riff in an entire cd does not mean they're "copying" Nirvana or going for a "new sound" etc. Try listening to the music first, the entire cd is Marcy Playground through and through.

NOTE: The song "Paper dolls" (track 10) was co-written with Jimmie of Jimmie's Chicken Shack. And the same song can also be found on their new album Re.Present as they both recorded their own version.

5 out of 5 stars The Best   June 8, 2004
marcy playground has done naught but amaze me. the lyrics, the melodies.... there is something for every fan, and every mood. buy this cd, you WILL NOT regret it.

2 out of 5 stars Boring   June 8, 2004
I'm not the kind of fan who expects every album to have the same, signature sound. I thought the first MP CD was exceptional, especially the lyrics on "Poppies" and, say, "Vampires of New York." That CD didn't have a bad song on it, and the acoustic-ish style worked well with Wozniak's singing style. Shapeshifter was different, but still had a lot of good tunes (and some stupid ones, but no problem). But, this album is just boring. I listened to songs like "Blood in Alphabet Soup" and was it was as though they weren't even trying to make it interesting. Maybe you could call it a Nirvana rip-off, but listening to it doesn't really even remind me of Nirvana. It's just bland, uninteresting to me.
