Very Good for What it DoesMay 24, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I don't read a ton of books - maybe a few a year. I bought the Kindle with the thought, or at least hope, it would get me to read more. I like the idea of being able to carry multiple books in a small, convenient form factor. I also like being able to quickly send samples of a book i've heard about to the device. And while i'm reading samples, or just browsing the bookstore from the device, i really like being able to spontaneously purchase and have the book in hand within seconds. For these reasons, I am very happy with this device. It's easy to use, easy to travel with, and the screen is fantastic.
My biggest problem with the whole concept is not being able to share books with friends or family. And the cost. In my experience, the price savings between the kindle book and the physical one hasn't been that big, (especially compared with the library!), thus I don't think i will being "saving" much, if anything, over the long run with this thing.
I recommend it wholeheartedly for the convenience factor (and less clutter too if you don't like a ton of books laying around). But if you are intent on sharing or expect to save a ton of money, this might not be the perfect fit.
How do I love my new Kindle? Let me count the ways...May 23, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I realize that there are a couple thousand reviews on the Kindle. I guess I can't help but add my $0.02 worth.
My wife gave me a Kindle for my birthday. I have now read three complete books using the Kindle, and I am totally enchanted with it.
I am a lifelong reader. I have read hundreds of books in my time; to say that I love reading would be an understatement. I also have worked with computers since 1976, important since I have spent thousands of hours working at a computer monitor.
When I first heard of the electronic book readers, I thought that they would be books being displayed on a computer CRT screen, and I wasn't interested in the least. Reading on a computer monitor wears on one's eyes. When I started reading about the Kindle, I learned about "electronic ink." Hmmmmm.... interesting concept, but I'll believe it when I see it.
I believe it.
Apparently, Jeff Bezos's vision for the Kindle was to create a device where you got lost in the story you were reading - the true "book" experience. And I have to say that for me, that has happened. I completely forget that I am reading a book from an electronic device. Turning pages is automatic, and takes no longer than turning the physical pages on a physical book. Reading produces no more strain than usual.
And the wireless capability is way cool. I understand you can do email with the Kindle... I haven't yet done that, but I might try it. I have used the wireless to research books, get definitions, and to use wikipedia. I do wish that I had Kindle access to the entire amazon collection, but that will probably happen someday.
I have always tended to read more than one book at a time; a few books on the nightstand, some on my desk, and so on. With the Kindle, I have instant access to whichever book I feel like reading, wherever I happen to be. I have added an 2gb SD storage card ($38 for two of them at Costco), and now I can store a zillion books.
Oh, and the Kindle can play audio books as well. I am listening to A Thousand Splendid Suns in the car. I have signed up for Audible.com.... and the audio books can be put right into the Kindle. (If you do decide to do this, be sure to get a storage card right away, since the audio books take up quite a bit more room.) You can also play audio while reading... how cool is that?
I doubt anybody will read this review, but if you do... please take time to seriously consider the Kindle. Especially if you're a serious reader.
Love My Kindle!May 23, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have had mine for about a month or so and am in love with it! The one small annoyance is the page buttons are located in a place where they can be pushed on accident, and it takes a long time to find your page again if you have moved multiple pages. Otherwise, I think it is wonderful and very useful. I can even read while walking if I make the text larger; fun! It's also entertaining to browse the store and download samples. I adore being able to skip around from book to book: my only concern is that the flexibility will ensure that I take 10 times longer to finish a book than I normally would :)
Love my KindleMay 23, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
My husband gave me my Kindle as a gift. I didn't know what it was at first! I'm an avid reader and I always carry it with me now. It's great to have a choice of reading anything you want at any time. And the books are so inexpensive! The battery lasts forever and I especially like changing font size to make it easier to read at the end of the day when I'm tired. I have bifocals and find it's easier to read the Kindle than a regular book - easier to focus on the page. The only negative I find right now is not having access to all books that Amazon carries. I've gotten spoiled not having to carry around thick books to read. I'm not a techy person but this is one item I am really enjoying!
