I purchased the Livescribe 2GB Pulse Smartpen for my daughter, an experienced first year teacher working on the Texas Gulf Coast. Her daughter triggered this purchase, having been offered a year as an intern reporter with the community newspaper and being in her Senior year with little time to spare she needed be able to interview other pupils without wasting their or her time. A little research lead her to the Livescribe which seemed to provide an easy solution. She found it ideal frequently writing the name only of the pupil in her notebook and then recording the interview. Immediately her teacher mother saw the Livescribe in use she could visualise just how much this would help her in meetings and in day to day classroom use. For example with her children learning to read she can record each child's reading while the pen automatically times them - instantly solving the words per minute question. She is a little concerned that it is so easy to record other people that one has to realise some caution with privacy laws. All second-hand information I confess, but the great enthusiasm shown by both users in Texas certainly impresses me. Peter W. Adams
Just What I NeededOctober 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the Livescribe Smartpen because I am an officer in a couple of clubs and was trying to use a small voice recorder to pick up details of the meetings that I missed while writing. The Smartpen does both, records the details while I take notes. Also, I transfer the notes from my Smartpen to my laptop computer to save as visual and audio records in case it need them later. I have started using my Smartpen when I do genealogy research. I record my own thoughts while I am taking notes of my research. In other words, I talk to my pen (only in private)! The Livescribe Smartpen has performed flawlessly. To say that I am satisfied with this product is an understatement.
Great for taking notes, a little too big for long term useOctober 30, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic product and it does everything it claims to do. There are a couple of quirks with the product that make it less than perfect. I've had the pen about a month and this is what I've found 1. The pen itself is big. It is uncomfortable after awhile. I don't have small hands and I would imagine with smaller hands, it would be even more difficult to wield. 2. The pen can be registered to only 1 copy of the software. You can have multiple copies of the desktop software running, but the pen is registered to one. This kind of limits how easily the pen can be used between multiple computers. 3. I wish the pen nib could retract so I could carry the pen in my pocket instead of in a case. 4. The helpline was terrific.
Great product - loses major points on softwareOctober 22, 2008 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased the LiveScribe a while back and use it to record business meetings. Great device and great to be able to review notes by tapping on the note in your notebook and hearing the audio corresponding to that note. My chicken scratch now actually serves a purpose.
HOWEVER: there is no Mac compatible software released with this product and doesnt't look like anything is forthcoming any time soon. This is simply unacceptable. There have been vague promises made on the forums of LiveScribe... it is pretty outlandish considering that Macs are dominating the education market... Livescribe markets this as an ideal tool for college students (which it is, wish I had had this when I was in college). Something like 70% of incoming students are coming with in with Macs.
Additionally, the software doesn't support 64 bit Vista which I also have both on my mac desktop via Boot Camp and another PC I have at the office.
It is a waste. I have basically lost notes forever because I have not been able to archive them to either my PC or my Mac. Luckily the 2GB of memory lasts a good long while, but still... this is again, unacceptable.
