You will love your KindleJuly 4, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have been using my Kindle for about a month now, and I am very pleased with it. I would like to share two impressions: 1- Do not get discouraged by the comments regarding the placement of "next page" and "previous page" buttons, flipping pages without intending to do so, etc. Once you place the device appropriately into the extremely useful and handsome "book cover", and remember to put your device into "sleep" as soon as you pause reading, half of your problems in this area gets solved. For the other half, I assure you, in a short period of time, your hands "learn" their right places while you are reading in different positions, like laying down, etc. It is like your balance system learning how to ride a bike. Once learned, it serves you good forever. 2- This new medium has changed the way I read dramatically. My obsessive nature had not allowed me to read more than one book at a time before. Now, I am reading three interesting books, one on psychology, one history and one mystery fiction all at the same time, along with my weekly subscription to Newsweek. I am spending more time reading, changing the book depending on my mood at the moment, always getting excited when I return to another book.
I also appreciate the included basic web browser, checking the news, the weather, etc. whenever I want, since I am always online for free, thanks to the Whispernet.
Trust me, you will love your Kindle, too.
Kindle - Why waitJuly 4, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My wife and I got our Kindles about a month ago. They are flat out terrific. The product delivers on all counts. The ability to change fonts when your eyes get a bit tired has caused for a few more late nights than is advisable but oh well. Ease of use, ease of ordering and the "read sample" capability has been awesome. If you're an avid reader, this is a no brainer.
I do wish that the music function (experimental) accepted I Tune format and, as has been noted on the message boards by many other users, the case is pretty ordinary. We reinforce the device to the cover that came with the purchase using simple velcro "dots". They work, but for the money, we should have been given a more elegant, functional cover.
These small shortcomings aside, I'm sorry I waited this long to take the plunge. My opinion is that there is no need to wait for a new design, this one is just fine, thank you.

The Kindle is a great product. Easy to use. The Kindle can hold multiple books and great for traveling because now I have all my reading in the Kindle. A great feature is the ability to adjust the font from small to large so anyone can read without difficulty. Built in dictionary is great for on the fly lookups. Allows you to write notes as you go along. Easy to read in sunlight as well as normal light. Over 125,000 books already available online. Books are about half the cost of regular books, you can't go wrong with the Kindle if you love to read.
Me and my KindleJuly 4, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have only had my Kindle for about a month and I am soooo happy. I do have to learn to control my urge to buy every book I have have ever wanted to read. It's much too easy. I bought a document over the internet and decided to download it to the Kindle. Once that was figured out it was downloaded in seconds. I have downloaded several of my music CD's. The sound is quite good. Especially, I think, when you don't really expect it to be. The reading screen is extremely clear. The fact that I can change the type size is fantastic! I am seventy years old and my old eyes appreciate the larger type. I cannot tell enough people about this product! I will say that the Kindle has a few problems, and I know Amazon is probably going to shoot out a new one with all my complaints fixed, probably within the next six months. I will be jealous of those that have the new one, but since I am feeling so close to my present Kindle, I doubt I will upgrade immediately. I will list my complaints here so that Amazon can have another opinion to ensure their design guys to get on it. First of all, it is a bit awkward to hold on to. Without the cover (which is the best way to use it), one has to be careful how one holds it. Otherwise, one will be flipping pages forward and back willy nilly. In other words, the page turners need to be improved upon. My second complaint is the back cover plate. It comes off much too easily. I fell asleep with my Kindle and when I woke up the back was missing. I didn't notice it until I went to work and I was showing it off. Maybe a bit of a change would prevent that from happening. (And, yes, Amazon....I did have the little notches notched.) Sometimes I find it a bit awkward to travel around in the Kindle, but that may be due to the fact that I am rather new with it and I haven't read the whole instruction booklet or the booklet I bought to tell me how to use it. There are a few tricks one should learn that are handy. I have figured out a couple. (Thanks to same booklets.) I am sure there are many more. As for the cover....well, I will give it one star. The Kindle is not secure in the cover unless it is closed with the rubber band holding it tight. I have attemped to figure out if I am doing something wrong and I just haven't found the trick to securing it, or it simply is not securable. It is a bit hard to hold on to while reading when it is still in the cover. One gets the feeling that it just might shoot across the room if one is not careful. I have dropped it because of a) being old and clumsy, or b) the cover is young and clumsy. I have found that I can use the attached rubber band to hold the Kindle on the cover while reading and it isn't too hard to deal with it this way. (Other owners will understand what I am talking about.) Page flipping is not a problem but anything else you might want to do takes a bit of effort. I use the rubber band from my organic brocoli to hold the whole works together while traveling. I read with the cover on when I think there is a possibility of my Kindle getting dirty or some other catastrophe could hit it like "little fingers" visiting. I can slam the cover shut quickly without damaging anything. As for waiting for the NEW Kindle to come out before buying, forget it. Remember, I am seventy. How long can I wait? I'll let the kids rave about the newer and most perfect model, and of course, how much money they saved when they bought it compared to what I spent. Maybe they won't buy a lot of more expensive books while they are waiting. Kindle books are cheaper. And just think, I can give it to "little fingers" to practice reading with when I buy my updated model. All in all, I am most happy. Me and my Kindle are a pair.
Books are dead, long live literature!July 4, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
As a person involved with ID (industrial design) on a daily basis, this product is a disaster. I am constantly bumping buttons while trying to read. There's no comfortable way to hold the thing. The case that comes with it is *terrible*, and the whole device is slanted? *Why*? The thing is too busy and has too many buttons. Seriously Amazon, contact me, we'll work on this thing.
The functionality however, outshines *all* of this. Being able to get a book at anytime, anywhere -- fabulous.
The built in dictionary has also had the effect of making literature more accessible to me. When I run into words I do not know, I can look them up immediately, and thus I am more inclined to read books I might not otherwise.
The price of some books is a bit annoying.... But this isn't amazons fault. Blame this on our copyright regime. I don't see any reason why books that are 50+ years old should cost 9.99 when *new* books cost 9.99. But I have the same complaint about music. Why can't I buy the Beatles entire discography for 40$? Its 50 years old for christs sake. But there are also great deals on older classics. A lot of Oscar Wilde books are under $2. I consider that a fair price in exchange for the work of formatting the book for the kindle.
In short, although flawed I love this thing. I can't wait to catch up with all the classics I've always wanted to read. There's 5000 years of literature out there, start reading!
