3 out of 5 stars decent camera for the price   July 9, 2008
I bought this camera to take pictures of my girls at the swimming pool this summer. They love to swim, and I really like underwater pictures. There have been several things that I have noticed that this camera does, or doesn't do well, but overall it has been ok.

Cons:
The first thing I noticed it the time it takes to take a picture. I also have a Canon Digital Rebel and it is fast on taking action pictures, so switching to this camera has been difficult for me. It takes 2 or 3 seconds to take a picture, so have have missed some action shots of my kids.

Second, you can't see what you are taking a picture of underwater, even with goggles, it is just a black screen, so you are just guessing where you are taking the picture, also causing missed pictures.

Third, it doesn't preview the picture right after you take it, so it takes even more effort to see if you got your picture or not. You have to go to review your pictures in order to see what you took.

Finally, if you delete all your pictures off of your card, it starts taking counting pictures back at 1. I like to save my swimming pictures in one folder to be able to find them quickly, and if you have 3 or 4 file named PICT001, you run into a problem. I even contacted vivitar to see if I had a setting wrong or something, but they told me that is how the camera counts pictures.

Pros:
Its waterproof. It takes decent pictures underwater, when you actually get it pointed at the subject.

Overall, I think that this camera has done what I wanted it for, and was a reasonable price. I think I am expecting this camera to work like my other more expensive, digital cameras, and it is designed for that. It is made for underwater pictures or videos.

4 out of 5 stars Camera dont function with super heavy duty batteries   July 4, 2008
The camera takes a bit to get use to but functions well, until your on a trip and batteries need to be replaced. I only had super heavy duty batteries left and the camera would not function, I thought it was broken.
I came home and put in alkaline batteries, then rechargeable batteries and the camera functioned.
Overall I am pleased with the camera, but have not attempted to take any underwater shots as of yet.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the price   June 23, 2008

I was all excited when I saw a fully waterproof 6.0mp camera for $119. Well, that's where my excitement ended. The camera takes bad pictures. They have a strange hue to them. It can not be adjusted. The video is horrible. Whatever setting you use, they will be washed out. The battery indicator shows drained battery even with brand new ones installed. The shutter speed is the slowest of any camera I have ever seen. Most pictures come out blurry. No optical zoom. Just not a good camera.

Better spend your money on a nice Olympus waterproof model.

5 out of 5 stars Underwater Camera   June 19, 2008
Superb service and it's a great underwater camera for a very reasonable price. I had tried a protective case over my Canon, but this works much better.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent for the purpose!   June 4, 2008
I bought one of these for myself and one for my host on a trip to Hawaii. We went nuts taking underwater videos of turtles and fish. Every evening we downloaded our clips to an old laptop and sat around boring our friends and family.

It captured video clips underwater very well. Make sure to set the underwater mode before shooting. With 2500MA rechargeable batteries the power usage was very acceptable.

Still shots underwater were a little more problematic because it has a slow shutter speed underwater and even a flash doesn't help a lot. But over time it certainly is a better value than throw-away film cameras.

Regular surface daylight pictures were very acceptable with good color and exposure.
Don't substitute this for a decent digital camera in safe, dry environments though. It bleaches out videos to the point of looking like old home movies in direct sunlight. The lack of a focus function precludes better compositions.

Conclusion, extends your digital capture environment very nicely to wet, dark, and dirty settings.

Cons: It is hard to adjust modes underwater or determine if your movie capture is already on. Hard to capture the photo subject -- an external frame that was aligned with the camera's field of view would help.
