Poor quality does not win the day October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ordered this to replace the original mount lost on holiday, and didn't actually need the charger. This is a shame as this is the sole part of the product that actually worked fine.
The mount on the other hand was simply rubbish - it didn't fit the TomTom very well but I thought I'd live with that and perhaps add a bit of tape to hold it in place. But the real disaster was the suction cup which held the window for all of 5-10 seconds before falling off no matter what I did. Noticed that the plastic ring below the sucker was snapped-not sure if this was me or as it arrived, but it didn't help this mediocre product to be anything other than fit for for the rubbish bin.
Never had a problem October 11, 2008 We have two Tom Tom's and a Navman and have never experienced a single problem with screen holders; in fact I have never had one fall off ever. I keep the screen clean and never moisten the suction cup.
The Weakest Link: TomTom could easily do better September 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The windscreen sucker works up to now for me, but I keep the inside of the windscreen scrupulously clean (a fag, since black dust collects on it all the time), store the sucker in a polythene bag to keep dust off, and breathe on the sucker to moisten it with condensation. But it's ridiculous to expect it to work forever even so. What it needs is cheap spare suction cups and one spare included with each new windscreen mount. Who wants to wait for a replacement when the first one stops working? Having to buy a whole new mount and a charger each time is ridiculous and environmentally unfriendly. Moreover TomTom don't let on that meticulous cleanliness is vital.
I wish that satnav manufacturers would devise a mounting system that does not show thieves by a ring on the windscreen or some other clue that they should smash a window to see if the satnav is in the glove compartment.
It's hard to imagine car manufacturers installing a standard socket for loose satnavs, since they probably want to end up installing their own OEM versions and make money on those. But I find portable TomTom satnavs better on the whole than the satnav fitted in a recent Honda Civic. Separate satnavs can have a much shorter product cycle, and a map update on the Honda satnav cost more than my TomTom including its maps. What's more, the map update for the Honda did not stop it giving daft directions at times. The TomTom lives by my PC when not in use and is updated all the time for free, but updating the Honda satnav is much harder and ridiculously expensive.
TomTom provide great value for money, but the windscreen mount lets down an otherwise great product.
Totally useless September 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even though I knew other reviewers had given this product a poor rating, I still bought it on the assumption that I could succeed where others had failed.
I couldn't. No matter how much a try, I cannot get the holder to stay attached to the screen for more than 20 minutes.
Totally useless - 1 star.
(Still can't figure out why TomTom aren't selling the same holder that came with my TomTom that did actually work.)
Works fine August 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This holder has worked fine for me. Start with a clean windscreen, moisten the cup a little, stick it on firmly, and it will stay on for ever. I've even used this holder stuck onto the speedometer of my motorbike (VFR800). The vibration and bumps are far greater than in a car, and it didn't budge.
The charger works well too, and so I'd certainly recommend this product.
