Pretty good November 19, 2008 I've owned this for around 1 month now and am pretty pleased with it. I chose it because it has Long Wave (as well as MW and FM), and this is fairly unusual these days. The sound quality is fairly good given the size of the unit, and the build quality is good as well - it looks good on your bedside table. Reception is generally without problems (the power lead works as the FM aerial) and with 10 FM presets (and others on FM and LW) you have a good choice of stations to listen to. Manual tuning is easily accessible as well. In fact, all the frequently used controls are simple to use (I like the large snooze button on the top) and the less frequently used ones are almost as easy. If you have trouble, the instructions are detailed and well written. You are spoilt for choice with the options of snooze, nap, light snooze etc. The light is a bit "cold" and not bright enough to read by by a long chalk. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is too easy to hit the DST button and end up with the time 1 hours out. Recommend it, although it is a bit pricey.
Nice clock, shame about the radio November 7, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Looked for a replacement "Dream Machine", preferably with a smaller footprint. The ICFC773 seemed to fit the bill. It is most impressive with its simple controls easy-read dial, presets and wide range of settings and functions. But then I turned the radio on... The small footprint means a very small speaker and a resultant tinny sound. As an alarm clock it works brilliantly and the tone encourages getting up quickly, just to switch it off!
Not perfect, but not bad October 30, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This radio alarm clock almost fits the bill perfectly, apart from a few minor niggles.
First, the good points:
- dual alarms, nice variable snooze feature, and nap - the light can be configured to come on whenever the radio is on, so useful to nod off to the light and radio, using the sleep option - volume of alarm is fixed level, so you aren't penalised for having the radio on low volume by not waking up! - stopping the alarm and switching it on/off are separate functions, so you can stop the alarm without having to remember to set it again for the next day
However, there are a few things I'd like to have:
- manual time setting is a pain; prefer radio controlled, even though it's a single button press to switch between DST/GMT - no date feature, so the alarm setting is on everyday - no weekday/weekend only option - no battery back-up; holds time for about a minute if power fails
If these features all existed, this would be the perfect option.
A few observations:
- the light isn't really a bedside light replacement; it gives a decent white light, but not strong enough to healthily read by. It is variable-intensity which is useful though - there are two variations of this clock, and Amazon seem to supply the ICF-C773L, despite the code shown. The ICF-C773 (no L!) is without Long-wave and displays time in 24-hour clock. I think this is only sold in mainland Europe. The ICF-C773L has Long-wave (MW/LW/FM), 12-hour display, and is the one I received. I don't think this is clear either from Amazon, or Sony's own site.
There's no hum from the power supply, but radio reception is a bit variable - usual with internal aerial radios, and nothing to fault this product for.
Great clock radio June 30, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've bought this to replace an older Sony clock radio. The main reason for the replacement was the very bright LCD display on the old clocka and the narrow viewing angles for the display. This radio looks good, appears to be well built and has a greater range of functions. The radio reception is very good in my area and, despite the myriad of buttons, the unit is very easy to use. It has even managed to gain approval from my wife!
Pricey but worth it... January 12, 2007 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
After looking for a new alarm clock this product caught my attention... I'll get straight into it here and say that its the best looking alarm clock radio ive seen! Especially when the light is on, it adds a nice atmosphere to the room. I previously had an alarm clock where the display was too bright and was a distraction at night. No problems here as the display has a backlight that can be adjusted with 3 settings. Its viewable without becoming bright. The settings are easy to use and i had got acquainted with the functions in no time. You can set the light to come on when the radio is on and the light also flashes with the alarm. Theres also a sleep timer and a nap countdown. Note that the sleep timer and alarm (by the way you can have two) can be used simultaneously night and morning. Now for some minor critics... The power cable aslo acts as the units arial. The signal can be a bit distorted at some times however just make sure the wire is straight. Also the 'melody' alarm clock tones are quite naf in my opinion. You can choose from green sleeves, fur elise, peer gynt suite: morning and spring from the four seasons. Theres also a buzzer (a two beep kind) that gradually gets louder. I personally will be waking up to the radio. The snooze button is located right in the center of the unit at the top which is great for ten extra minutes (up to 60).
All in all a great product and build quality is great, as you can expect from sony. I purchased the product from empire direct (via amazon) and it comes with a minimum 12 month warranty.
Would definately recommend if you dont mind paying a little extra
