Fabulous bit of kit! November 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the sapphire blue XP version about 6 weeks ago and I am in love with it! I was looking for a laptop for college but they are so heavy and bulky and this is small, compact and so light. In a shockproof case, I can just keep it in my bag with all my books. It comes with all the software ready installed (great for non-geeks like me!) and in 10 minutes of opening the box, I was ready to go. I have typed a full essay on the keyboard (I could imagine chunky fingers having problems when typing at speed), but it is so easy to get used to, even the touchpad mouse works ok, but I bought a USB mouse too. OK, so you have to buy an external DVD/CD drive, but I use it with a memory stick to load stuff from my PC to my netbook and vice-versa. I have absolutely no complaints, except maybe that it shows fingerprints all to easy. Honestly, I am not at all techie and this is the first gadget I have bought during the first week of its release. Even if you don't use it daily, it is a great little thing to shove in your bag and take into town - find a wireless cafe, sip hot chocolate and surf the net, whilst people watching at the same time. What could be better?
Acer Aspire 8GB version and the 120GB hard drive version November 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought 2 Acer Aspire one for the little one, which was the 8GB solid state version and the 120GB hard drive version for me. Both look well and came with Linux pre-installed. Both machine booted up quickly and the 120GB was the first to check for updates and there was quick a few to updates to download and it did take an hour or so to complete. I had to manually start the update for the 8GB version with no fuss.
My daughter was happy with the fact that she could down load music and the sound, for such a small machine, was quite clear crisp. both machines are light to carry. Im glad i made the right choise.
Very good machine for the price

Only had this machine a few days but think its great. Didnt start off too well though. Decided on the Linux model. a, cos its something differant, b, Linux is supposed to be virus free, & c,Firefox is free. Got it home, switched it on & found it was running Windows XP. Wasnt too bothered about that til it turned out to be Windows XP Hungarion version !. Took it back to the shop. ( a well known purple fronted PC store). They fixed it ok , & now its running Linux as it should. They had no explanation why it had Hungarion XP on it. Anyway, I love it. Boots up in 15 secs, screen is crystal clear, it picks up & connects to wireless networks with no trouble, speakers aint too good , but you realy cant expect great things from speakers that small, & its as shiny & almost as classy as a Mac at a fraction of the price. Great !.
Nearly perfect October 26, 2008 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
Thought that the 1gb version would be enough to cope comfortably but have to say it can be slow at times. Have 10mb cable broadband and even when hard-wired it can take ages to load certain pages so as you can imagine using a mobile broadband dongle can be very frustrating. Having said that I am really happy with it overall, it's small enough to take pretty much anywhere and that's what it was designed for. Battery life is as quoted and it picks up wireless networks that other laptops dont.
An Outstanding Netbook October 20, 2008 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
Having been used to 15 or 17 inch laptops for the last few years, this seemed too good to be true. As the owner of 2 x Acer laptops, I was confident in the brand for reliability & value, and the Amazon.co.uk price is VERY competitive.
With a whopping 120Gb hard drive and 1Gb of RAM (expandable to 1.5 - using standard laptop SO DIMM modules), this little beauty is a marvel. CPU runs at 1.6GHz, so doesn't slouch at anything - the Office 2007 package you get (trial sudent/teacher edition - so no Outlook) runs very well. The small 9-inch screen is very clear, and with 3 x USBs you can hook up any device you want - obviously an external DVD/CD RW is a necessary purchase if you need to load programmes/software via that means, 'cos it doesn't have one. This version has XP as the operating system - there is a LINUX version if that's your preference.
I had a Fujitsu-Siemens netbook through work, and I have to say, this is miles better!! About 2 to 2.5 hrs battery life as well, and the wi-fi connection is robust and reliable.
I use this for work, and on the train - it is so compact and portable, I never plan to lug a full-size laptop around in my briefcase/rucksack again!!
Overall, an excellent, well-designed product with huge potential, and priced VERY competitively. Highly recommended
