1 out of 5 stars Disappointing and nowhere to go for help!   November 24, 2008

Bought one of these in order to watch my Sky box whilst on business trips around the globe. Works well whilst my laptop is connected to my home network but no access to my sky box when I am away from home. Have tried the Sling website (heavily focussed on selling upgraded devices, posted messages on there etc) and got no help whatsoever there other than the ususal "is it plugged in". Worthless to me if it doesn't work away from home - which it doesn't! Ho Hum!! Still waiting...........

Plug the box in at home, connect your TV input into the slingbox and the slingbox to your broadband router. On your PC/laptop install the software (simpler when connected to your home network). Your slingbox then streams your tv signal up to the web and you laptop connects through to it. You have full control of your TV/Sky/Cable setup at home (IR connector allows you to change channel).

How cool is that! and it works!

Couple of notes though - remember that it's using your broadband - so speed (and therefore image quality) is limited to your broadband UPLOAD speed - with some suppliers this might be as low as 256k. The lower the speed the lower the quality - in my experience 256k is just about watchable for short periods of time - 350k+ is good enough to watch for an evening, but it's no HD!

If you have someone at home watching the same TV - remember to tell them that you're watching it - so they don't keep changing channels in the middle of the match. Alternatively (as I have) get multi room and plug the slingbox into the lesser used room... at least there are no arguments then about who has the remote!

4 out of 5 stars Useful gadget. Excellent customer support.   October 2, 2008

I found this quite simple to set up, thanks to the step-by-step instructions with photos. Couldn't quite get it to work with my internet connection though, so I called the number provided (a 'normal' number too, not an expensive 0891 or 0870 one). Three minutes later the helpful support person had it up and running for me.

I'd say this is very useful if you travel regularly or live abroad and want to watch the TV you're used to, especially sport and soaps.

The only thing to consider before you buy is the upload speed of the internet connection you'll be using at the Slingbox end of things. Make sure it's over 600 or so kbps and you should be fine. If in doubt, use an online speed tester (Google can help you find one) or ask your internet provider.

Highly recommended.

I have Virgin Cable with Setanta Sports package, but could I get to watch it when kids hog the main TV on a Saturday afternoon, no!
So I looked at one of these Slingbox's as way of possibly helping, and help it has! The kids can now happily watch a DVD in front of the main TV, and now I can watch Setanta on my wireless laptop in the other room.

Picture quality from the Slingbox is great on the laptop and I can change channels on my Virgin Box remotely should I want to. It was fairly easy to setup too. The Slingbox does need to be close to your INTERNET router though, as the Solo itself doesn't have any wireless facility. I had to buy a slightly longer network cable from PC World to hook it up (just around a fiver), because the one in the box just wasn't quite long enough, but after doing this and connecting it to my router the instructions were fairly straightforward. You download the Slingbox software from the internet, it configures your router for you automatically allowing you to control the Slingbox from anywhere, so no need to mess about with any router settings.

Once you have set it up in your home, you can control the Virgin Box from anywhere that has an internet connection.
I've been at a friends house and watched Setanta from their's on my laptop using their wireless connection. (They obviously had to give me their wireless key first so I could use their home wireless of course!) but after that it worked at treat! If you want flexibility to watch TV or Digital anywhere, get this product!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent gadget - it really works!   September 13, 2008

Fantastic device. Really well packaged and well thought-out.

The amazing thing is that it really works, and works well too. You must note that it isn't wireless, so you need to use a network cable or, as I did, use a pair of SlingLinks which allow you to send the data from the TV to the router via your house's electricity supply (sounds weird but it works fine).

You could gripe about the lack of wireless connection, but the data rates seem to be quite high (around 4000kps when using the device on your hope network) so avoiding wireless is perhaps understandable.

I was a bit concerned when some people started talking about fiddling around with network settings. Fear not, because - other than standard firewall "Click Yes to allow this program to access your computer" stuff - you won't need to do anything too complicated, unless you have two or more routers in the same network.

If, like me, you're a "plug it all in and hope of the best"-type person, be sure to press the reset button and wait for a minute or two, so that everything will work first time. The drivers and help files are downloaded from online, which is fair enough and ensures you have the latest version of the drivers.

The only other problem I had was that the SCART passthru co
