A great tv and, at 849.99 delivered from Amazon ,a bargain. July 18, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've been keeping an eye out for an lcd tv for some time now, obviously the longer you wait with this kind of stuff the more advanced the technology is and the lower the prices, so I was in no great rush and had actually planned to get something this autumn at the soonest. However, when I saw this tv had been discounted down to half its original price within 7 months of its release I threw caution to the wind and bought one from Amazon.
Despite all the bad reviews for HDNL I needn't have worried because delivery was fine;a phone call on the Thursday evening to set up an appointment for the following Monday and another call to say they were on their way (albeit an hour late).
As for the tv, well we think it's great looking and great to look at and we haven't even got HD yet.Our previous tv was a 32" crt Toshiba so the menus and set ups were all pretty familiar.I've done some fiddling with brightness and contrast etc to suit our tastes and the tvs position and the picture seems largely flawless to me,particularly with dvd. It's true that through our standard def. Humax pvr9200t the picture can occasionally reveal some artifacts, and if the programme being broadcast is fairly low definition it can get very blocky (we watched 5 minutes of Open Water and the picture was very poor),but overall it's as good as our old crt and in terms of motion smearing and colour bleed definitely superior to the Sony 26" d3000 we recently bought in Sainsbury's.Which is to say there's none on the 47" Tosh and noticable ammounts on the 26" Sony.Definition is very good, again much more detailed than the 26" Sony. This is all as viewed via the Humax pvr,the tv's built -in tuner isn't bad,but it's definitely not as good.Of course SD picture quality is all dependent on the strength of your signal and ours isn't great and never gets above 60% so if you get a stronger signal through your ariel you might well get better pictures. As for reviews elsewhere (What hifi and Plasma & LCD magazines)that go on about the black levels not being up to standard - I'm beggared if I can see what they're talking about. The blacks look black to me.But then we do sit about 3.5m/12ft from the tv and I suspect many people's complaints about lcds are because they're sitting too close.I must say I wouldn't recommend this tv to anyone whose seating position is much less than ours unless they're watching HD or Blu-Ray.Sound is very good, much clearer than our old crt and new Sony, although you don't get much bass at low volumes.Eventually we hope to be trying it out with full surround sound and Freesat, but in the meantime we're more than pleased with our purchase.
Good tv at a great price June 17, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
OK, delivery was a day or so later than expected but that's just what happens living in Scotland. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I switched the unit on - the picture was not great - I was using a Virgin +hd box with decent scart lead. However, switch the input to hdmi and the quality is really good for non HD broadcasts. HD broadcasts are awesome - pity Virgin only have BBC HD at the present. DVDs play at decent quality through a scart but I'm going to upgrade to a new player that can up-scale via hdmi. Takes a bit of getting the menus set up the way you want but worth the effort. Sound system is actually pretty good for a tv and can be tweaked to your liking - avoids the need for surround sound. It looks great - probably not too good if you have a smallish room - you need to be able to sit at least a few metres from the screen to get the best results but that goes for all LCD TVs. Overall a good unit and Amazon's price is superb If you are looking for a large lcd tv then I'd definitely recommend this model but make sure you have a hdmi connection - I've not even tried it through a standard ariel yet
Excellent buying experience June 3, 2008 14 out of 20 found this review helpful
I had been reviewing TV's for a few weeks on different websites. Found this deal on Amazon and couldn't believe my eyes. Quickly checked out other site ratings and costs, 350 less than any other site and good reviews.
I ordered the TV on the Saturday night, on Monday the delivery company called me to set up a delivery. Wednesday, brilliant only four days later with a one hour delivery slot between 7am - 8am, FANTASTIC.
The delivery men phoned me at 6.55am to say they were on the way by 7.20 am, TV delivered in the house and i was on the way to work. GREAT SERVICE ALL ROUND and probably the BEST buying experience i've had.
AND THE TV IS GREAT
